I ask this though, these old houses will have at least one layer of wallpaper on the walls, so wouldn't this stop it breathing ?

The biggest problem with theses old houses is that they were not built with double glazing and central heating in mind

I'm starting to find a lot of the problem is down to loose backing, the wall gets cold and the moisture is building up behind it. The last two jobs I've done were caused by this and also bad ventilation, hacked off and redone problem solved. One job had been done once before and the other was caused by a spark using the wrong plaster.

If the wallpaper had not been painted I find it's usually sound but the amount that is painted with a glossy type paint they usually come off in sheets when stripping so yes the moisture is getting trapped and blowing the backing.

Agree. Sick building syndrome.

I remember when plastic cladding was being slapped over fascia and soffits with no vents and dropping off with rot sometime after.
We have this incredible ignorance of the past and the craftsmen that they didn't know what they were doing.
And set about ruining places armed with the latest unnecessary shoite.

Agree with 90% of what this guy says but he doesn't half make a fool of himself by childishly attacking surveyors calling them goons etc. Very unprofessional
