going self employed advice....

Members online

hi all.
Hope your all busy and well..

Question is or should I say, I'm after advice from Experianced tradesman.
I'm seriously thinking of leaving my full time job as a plasterer/multi trader to work for myself due to a number of reasons..I.e being taken for a mug I think...

Do you guys have any advice on how much cash to set aside for cash flow and set up?
It's only going to be me and my van and I have all tools etc...
I've got a idea on prices for advertising etc...
I've not got a lot of work lined up but hoping to once I spread the word and advertise.
I can't at the moment as I'm on the books etc...
Thanks a lot guys....

I’m the opposite always been self employed but am looking at getting a job , been offered a few opportunities working for others and am seriously thinking I might be better off , but like you say , gotta take the s**t that comes with it

You can be self employed parallel to your paye job. Try it that way, build up some customer base, when you have enough to rely on go self employed full time. Less likely to go wrong but that's just my opinion.

Ok thanks all.
What's your circumstances then zolco?

I’ve been thinking the same thing mate, quite fancy a steady job with paid holiday and a pension company van etc.

What you think then for start up cost to see through ?
As cash flow is key.

I'm thinking assuming no work for the first 6 months so have back up for that??
Even tho I will have some to begin with..

What you think?

Are you doing your own private jobs at the moment? Concentrate on building a customer base in your free time evenings/weekends if it looks promising build from that...

I started off subbing to a contractor and doing my own bits on the weekend then started taking Fridays away from subbing and doing Fridays for myself and when I got even busier I jacked in the subbying all together and did all my own work then, I was unwell and it all went to s**t and now I’m subbing to a gang again and doing my own stuff if I can be arsed. There aren’t many employed jobs available in the building trade.

You on the books for a builder?

when you first go self employed business will be slow at first. you may even have to carry out some sub contracting.
the spring is the time to start a business, not a few weeks before christmas. you may need to get an account set up with your supplier. you may need a bank overdraft. you will need a business plan.
you do need to have a float of money .

Lots of us subcontract , lots of us have no float , I have an account but often pay as I go, I try to get builder to supply all material these days ,keeps me out of vat , keeps the amount I'm owed down also

Basically f**k all of that goin over here that I have seen. Maybe get a van if in with the right ones, but basically everyone here, is self employed. I myself have worked for the same person for a year and a half yet I'm self employed. Always been the same, was with a fella for 8years on self employed basis. Means they don't have to to sick holiday and pensions. Upside is get 2 grand tax rebate a year lol

Remember only as good as your last job, probably why gps isn’t working and is always on here

Thanks for the advice malc.
Do you do just plastering?

Depends on what you put in , any business is about your efforts ,your acumen ,your luck and determination ,lastly every area in the country has different ceilings for earnings , the more risk the more gain is also part of it , get the work, be good,be reliable ,get a good team , people and teams like @malc didn't happen overnight ,take the losses and move on , learn from the knocks , been master of your own destiny has its pros and cons

How much float money roughly malc?

Use my builder when you first start I did that when I first started 2 years ago and kept me going with steady work, now the words spreading starting to use it less but I couldn't have made my first year without it

2 years, I did a 6 week course then set up (abuse time) not taking into account what I spend on stuff (van, tools etc) I had about 5k set aside
