If there is no other way around it you have to have a very good selection of trowels, margin trowels pipe trowels scrapers etc what ever fits and have the time to work on the plaster to get it flat.
 
WOOD makes for great tools.
Find a piece that fits your criterea then spend a few minutes smoothing it off before giving it a good half-hour soak.
Once soaked, you'll get a great finish with your new wooden tool :)
 
i keep a couple of ice cream tub lids in the back of the van for tricky areas, just cut em to shape, theres a thread about the ceiling rose somewhere, some one else said about making your own plastic tools.

thats a good idea about cutting up ice cream lids. was told to get them to box in pipes aswell. thanks for suggestions peeps =)
