if the chateau was in uk it would be a listed building. and he would be required to keep the property in proper order.

Yeah, I thought that when watching it. Especially when he was knocking the wall through for the master suite. Just the outbuildings alone was a mammoth project. Interesting to see the French trades, as well. He didn't really use many, saying they were too expensive.
