Was doin a reskim yesterday. Over old plaster with emulsion. Did usual 2 coats of pva. First coat of pva sucked in really quick. Applied 2ns coat and skimmed when tacky. Paster was patch setting on me very quick and had me chasin me to get finished.

If the walls suck in quick does a 3rd coat of pva do any good?
 
somtimes pva will not do the job like over old lime work , it has to be left for 24hrs or so to work fully as a primer coat , stabizers work better in a shorter time scale as will bonding agents i personally never use multiple coats ove pva weakens the bond .
 
agree with church, sometimes its too much effort to pva when a bonding agent will do it in one coat, a few months back myself and someone off here used 15L of pva on a ceiling, it must have had 5/6 coats
 
Church what's the stabiliser called I had to seal a couple of Walls I thought had distemper so I used sandtex stabiliser it's all I could get my hands on

this is the one I used is the artex stuff as expensive, seemed very good by the way sealed everything really well

I got a house to reskim soon that's all lime based. So you stick this stabiliser on then pva and skim?
 
Odd times spunk you get reskims which have been painted with lime paint and it is a bastardo to kill the suction even with wba. Pugs suggestion may just be the answer.
 
Tell me about it I did a load of gypbond before I started skimming on a job and had to give it all another coat
 
depends how long you leave it. I followed someone's advice on here once to just leave it for a few hours. Didn't kill the suction much at all.

so back to the stabiliser. Can you stick it on - how long do you leave it, and then pva and skim?
 
whack the stabiliser on, usually sucks in straight away, then i pva it as normal. i don't use wba much as i've never had any problems with pva.
 
yeah artex stabilex £25 for 5ltrs from crown decortaing centres ..... cheeky monkeys have put the price up tho use to be £15 a year ago tut tut
 
actually how far does teh stabiliiliser go? pug, you reckon it got sucked in straight away - does it go further than a bonding agent?
 
In the dark ages before it used to tell you what to do on the tin. The old gadge that taught me always used 3 coats of pva and then he used to pop some in the 1st coat of skimming. He said that this meant that pva was sticking to pva and a few too many years later I sill drop a bit in and never had a problem.

couldn't say for sure fella, i normally only use it on distemper so the tub i've got have been in the van for best part of a year!
 
Yeah it goes a lot further than bonding agents or PVA as its really thin and watery.

A 5 litre tub did me about 4 or 5 rooms, just make sure you brush off as much loose powdery crap as you can before you paint it on
