Shipping containers

Been contemplating one on my front with a bit of work could turn it into work storage materials tools etc , don’t know how I’d stand with council etc but for the price of a used one I recon it would be a lot less than paying for builder to build garage or big timber frame ,
These guys do good job

Brother in law put a portacabin on his drive. Really hidden away on a cul de sac...the whole bloody street hated it.
Eventually they got the council to come out and he had to shift it or get a heavy fine...

Just sayin....

If it's there on a permanent basis, it will count as a building.
If it's outside of the building line, then you need (and won't get) planning permission.

Sticking it down the side (where a garge would be) should still need PP I think but unlikely anyone will care.
Makes it real easy if you ever move house!

I enquired about having one at my lake and was told that I'd need planning permission.
Years ago this wasn't the case.

Vince your F*****g barking just add a garage = adding value to your home...

Shipping container = dead money!!!

Nice one ,

Zombie mate I’ve seen some on sale for as little as £800 with a bit of tender loving care even a board and render the exterior could look spot on , all different sizes are available 20ft 40ft , tbh I thought it would be like having a shed , all this council crap always want money they do for nothing, single garage I’d estimate £10,000
The other thing I thought was good about them compared to building is it’s literally dropped into place in one go where as building I’d be getting materials constantly delivered

Something like this

It's classed as a permanent structure, and the council would make you move it once they relized or someone told them.
I agree though I'd go mental if someone plonked that on there drive near me.

@imago will know or have an idea :)

Why? I'm not a Gypo? :burlas:

Anyway, most of the info has already been covered by @owls @essexandy etc. The only thing I'd add (which won't help :burlas: is that you can have one on your property without planning for a maximum of three months as temporary storage. As the others said, after that you need planning, and they'll say no (rightly so IMHO) as they look sh1t.

@Vincey Build a timber shed/garage as that's classed as a temporary structure. Then render it and do that 'wallcrete' thing to make it look like stone/brick. All within the rules, no planning required and looks nice.

The last time we had a container moved with a hiab truck it was £800 + VAT which is most of the way to the materials for a decent lined timber structure.

As imago says the haulage cost is steep for them. I built a timber structure 10m x 2.4 at the side of my garage 2 year or so ago and put a box profile roof on it, cost was around 2k for materials and was built in a weekend. I do however live at the end of a culdisac and there is a 7ft beech hedge hides most of it on the neighbours side

I pay £146 every 28 days or until I need something out of it, whichever's the longer for a 20ft :crying:
The Robbing ba5tards!

But I might have to live in it soon so it's not too bad for the monthly rent bill :coffe:

Fixed it for you (y) :)

Actually, on a serious note that's bloody dear. I thought everything was cheaper up North? I'm paying £120:00 a month for a 40 ft container and a secure parking space (right beside the container) for the pickup.

You need to move South matey. :sisi:

Good money in these storage containers who ever wanted side line the other day on a thread £152 round my a month

I'll have to sub-let half the new unit to you. 'Victorian building in a canalside location, with adjacent parkland. Dedicated shower/toilet facilities, broadband ample parking and well positioned for local amenities.' :sorprendido3: (y)

The guy in the unit next door does steel/sheet metal fabrications. The one next to that I haven't met yet, but the sign outside says "The Rubber Man" Not sure if he's a contortionist, makes dildos and gimp suits, or just sells floor mats. I'll make sure I find out which before I say hello.

I see those garages lined up in storage wars on TV but nothing similar around me. Well not for sensible money. Also you see lighting inside them. Amazing. Wouldn't that be wonderful. Clear the crap out my garage and store it.
