I thought you were talking about joint compound when you said "mud". Over here in the States we call joint compound mud, and we just call plaster plaster, I didn't know that they called plaster mud over there...
If they do they are definitely not as common as over in the UK. All the plasterers here either brought the trade with them from Europe (mostly Italians) or learned it from working with someone else.
Some do phenomenal work yes.. Swirled ceilings are popular here as well and to do that right it has to be done with plaster so we definitely have a call for good plasterers... I would like to get into learning the trade myself as there is a big call for it due to the lack of people doing it but...
Mud not plaster to this chap please? Not sure I follow what you are saying.. If you are trying to insinuate that mud/joint compound was used and not Plaster then no you are wrong.
Yes, I mostly get renovations/remodel jobs not a whole lot of new construction. It mostly is drywall systems but we still do plastering, more often in higher end homes..

Yeah just one quote, there aren't many plasterers around here so I didn't have a lot of options and I don't like to have someone work for me unless I've seen there work before, I've seen this guys work on other house that I've worked on and it was pretty good...
