    Patch repair water damage

Essentially I suppose if a job is done as DIY people are willing to put up with a lot lower standards - the immediate aim is is just to remove the hole and fill it in - aesthetics are not the MAIN aim. I agree that I would not be able to match a plasterers finish but that is not what I am...

    Patch repair water damage

Steady on, what you are suggesting could cost hundreds. what i am suggesting should cost say £50 the roof has already been repaired at a cost of £500. whilst it would be nice to have a new ceiling it is out of the question in this scenario. how do plasterers patch repairs?

    Patch repair water damage

Hi Family member has asked me to repair this water damaged bit of plasterboard which is under a flat roof. The aim is to plasterboard it, fill in the gaps and paint it white - I won't be attempt to match the artex. Photos here https://1drv.ms/1HJRDLh My thinking is 1 - cut away old...

    Boarding done by seperate company

The Tesco analogy is not that far off... Its actually plasterers telling ME it may be cheaper to get a seperate boarder in because it may be cheaper. Clearly if the same job can be achieved by utilising 2 traders and for less money then why wouldn't you consider it. Anyhows, I have found...

    Boarding done by seperate company

No they dont have to pass the savings on to me but one of the advantages to being/using a bigger company is that they can save because of economies of scale - I found this with my boiler. If I used a company that did a lot of boarding the chances are they can get materials cheaper than...

    Boarding done by seperate company

No conclusive answer then. I'll get some actual quotes and see what happens. I wnat a lot of soundboard so in theory a company that does a lot of boarding may have access to cheaper materials - as I need an entire house doing so it will add up to a lot of board. I am based in Southampton if...

    Boarding done by seperate company

Bit of a long winded subject...but.. Rang up 2 places to get quotes for skimming and they both asked whether I will get someone else to do the boarding. They said they could do the boarding if I wanted but they also seemed happy for someone else to do it and did not insist they want to do it...

    Studwalls - plywood and plasterboard

For my purposes 2 studs walls would be overkill as you would lose too much space with 2x4 9or whatever the standard UK thing is) - what are the smaller thicknes studs I could use? You then have problems I spose with stability. So guess if you use ply you screw it into the studs and then...

    Studwalls - plywood and plasterboard

I am having some stud walls built. I have a big thing abotu soundproofing so will be putting in accoustic mineralwool between the studs and then using accoustic plasterboard or double boarding. It has been suggested I add in plywood - this seems more for stability reasons but would aid...

    Plastering over electrical cables

When oyou say flat you mean the electrician doesnt install the plastic conduit so it is totally flush with the wall? I assume if it is flush and enough ardwall is on top it hsould be OK. What is the minimum amount of hardwall/skin I would be looking for? How long after plasting woudl i know...

    Plastering over electrical cables

hmm, so sounds like it is acceptable/common but maybe not ideal.......? I am awaiting his quote so will weight it all up. He seemed pretty good otherwise so it wouldn't be a deal breaker.

    Plastering over electrical cables

I obtained a quote to get my house rewired (the external walls are bare block at the moment). The electrician says he will put the wires on the wall with plastic capping - the plasterer can then just plaster over it (hardwall) - the thickness of the hardwall and skim should be around 12mm so...

    Plastering - doorframes queries

OK, thanks. I spsoe as long as the old metal fixings are flush with the clinker block the new door frames can just be fitted over them and it won't matter if they are there.

    Plastering - doorframes queries

I am looking to have my whole house plastered soon (hardwall not plasterboards) I have taken out all of my old doors and doorframes. My walls are made out of clinker blocks and the old door frames were built so that the fixings were actually in the mortar. Bottom line is that I have have lots...

    Funny customers and prices

maybe because we will tend to do a bit more research and find out what the job entails. I would also suggest an expert should be able to provide a rough estimate of how long a job should take. That said, when I get quotes I rarely bargain - the trader has their chance to offer the best price...
