Blue grit

I have read many of the suggestions regarding blue etc for gloss backgrounds so we had a artex ceiling with gloss paint so out with blue grit.

So put a layer of blue grit left it 24 hours then put on bonding coat with a multi finish...... today after having skimmed it on Saturday noticed a big crack across the ceiling gave the ceiling a tap heard an echo realised it had not bonding to the ceiling, long and short had to pull the whole ceiling down as the bluegrit had pulled of the gloss paint and well now got bloody sore shoulders.

Lesson learned the hard way

Is it gloss paint de laminating, grit works but only if substrate is sound.

I’ve been to jobs where it hasn’t been put on thick enough (not enough aggregate) and the skim has blown. I rate the cheaper green plas prime over bondit but I’ve never had a problem with pva, only artex or paint bubbling but that would happen with pre-grit too.

It's the green bostik one I use, never had a problem.

So it was the gloss paint that failed?
Never had a problem with blue grit either until today always stuck to gloss surfaces before ....as it says on the tin

Yes looks like it, artex left in place now with Matt finish

Bloody long day

Your artex/paints failed on the substrate pal,not the blue grit........never ever had a problem with pre-grits
(I always use everbuild plasterers gripcoat myself) but then I always check that artex is sound on substrate first and anything that looks dodgy I overboard instead.

I had this with distemper paint blue gritted it an the b*****d was blown the next day.. some walls were ok. Was hard to tell. Had to stabilise it then pva, done the trick.

Check the surface before proceeding. It could be that the Artex was used to cover a poor surface so you need to dig and poke to see if it's solid. Local knowledge of the internal surfaces helps. Anything before 1970 could have a type of distemper on with modern emulsion on top that with artex on top of that. A long you come and bang on wet heavy plaster to a poorly stuck artex and you get problems. This distemper is losing its adhesions at time goes by. We've all had trouble with it. I have. Blooming stuff!
