Old old plasterboard....too old?

Bought a house that came with 100 sheets of plasterboard, stored in the attic since the 1980s.

Asked a plasterer if I could use them on the ceiling of my kitchen. He told me I could but to bond them(pva).

A younger plasterer has looked at them since they have been put up. He has suggested that skimming them won't work well and will give problems over time...he didn't say why.

Can anyone here advise me on this issue??? It's going to be a pain to take them down

They'll be ok if you prep them well

I'd SBR them
Diluted coat 4w to 1 SBR
Then a 1 to 1 coat.

Or any tile primer acrylic or other....

I'd avoid PVA for them boards

You can PVA them, but flick water on them after PVAs pulled in. If water disappears v quickly, then may need more PVA

Don't go mad with the PVA

You want some suction (water soaks in), but you dont want too much suction (water soaks in too quickly).

If I was paying a plasterer, Id give the boards one coat of dilute PVA, then warn the spread that the boards are ancient and let them choose the next step.

I've been saying for years how nice it'd be to have plasterboard with plenty of suction. Can't beat suction for a quick, high quality finish.
