Plaster v Plasterboard

Hi,

First time poster here in need of some steer. I'm renovating an old victorian property. The areas I need "plastered" are (3.2m high ceilings btw):

1. Party wall in terrible condition. Half of the wall (neighbours side) is a staircase but the other half is a bedroom. I'll have my kitchen up against the bedroom which will help but I'm keen on soundproofing as much as possible - skimmed soundproof plasterboard?

2. New internal block walls, including one that the TV will be hung on - plaster?

3. Chimney breasts - plaster?

4. Ceilings, soundproof plasterboard?

The plasterers that have come around to take a look have suggested dot/dab or battened plasterboard as it will be cheaper material and labour.

I prefer the solid feel of plastered walls, especially for hanging TV/Speakers etc, and am not a fan of the hollow cavity sound.

Although I'd like to keep costs down as much as possible I'm not convinced by the plasterboard alone and think I may need to mix methods at a minimum?

I'd be grateful for any advice.

stairs wall will need float n set, you'll struggle to board that wall without coming over stringer.....your 'plasterer' should've advised that he obviously hasn't a clue get a different spread in...I'd Hardwall it at the very minimum but depending on budget I'd prefer limelite renovating system but finding a spread willing and able to do that properly nowadays might be a challenge be careful you don't employ a chancing 5 min facebook skimmer trades full of em

Solid plastering is a dying art, if that’s what you want then don’t employ anybody aged below 45yrs old because they won’t have a scooby!!
All the best with it all.

Thank you, my gut was saying traditional plaster but got caught in two minds when considering sound proofing.

you don't really have much of a choice but to float & set it I'm afraid, to soundproof that wall with boards you'll have to come way over existing stringer.....dot n dab soundbloc will virtually have no effect. As someone else has mentioned, soundbloc is only really effective if installed correctly.
If you go down that route, you could make a new false stringer I suppose but you'll be narrowing the stairs quite considerably.....it won't be just one or two inches and your big old Victorian house will end up with a terraced staircase and look utterly shyte.

Someone told me 12.5mm plasterboard has a lot more properties thermal acoustic etc than 15mm sand cement, it’s hard to believe nowadays so many new systems and no jobs the same?
Same job different spec
