Some good points but ive been coming up against this a few times.
My take on it is that the people do it run their own business , they are used to being invoiced and then paying at a set date each month , IE you might finish a job on the monday of the first week of March but they dont pay till...
Yeah i use bank transfer but its a bit faffy giving your sort code and ac no , always paranoid your gonna get it wrong or they f**k it up and put it in wrong.
Dead handy for regular payments , most builders pay me that way.
Think IZettle at £25 is the one , i imagine it will be rarely used ...
Anyone any recommendations for card payments?
IZettle? PayPal?Sumup?
Wont be something i would use often but saves that bank will only let me take £300 etc or ive no cash on me.
Seems fair to offer something like this in 2017! They are only 20 or 30 quid
Well 1st "lead" comes in this morning.
£12.50 plus VAT to bid on a DPC.
Plaster around first floor of Terrence house 1 m up from floor level damp proofing an skimming to ceiling
Ill give that a miss :) Done loads of these over the years , ill know exactly the type of house and will no doubt...
Thanks
Joined MyBuilder but don't like how its set up , tenner just to get shortlisted but ill give it a go and see.
Gumtree wants £25 for an advert , that would be down the bottom of the page in a matter of hours so more to promote it.
Another one i might try but not keen on that either.
cheers appreciate that.
Id be delighted if i got 10k over the year from it , be well worth the investment , would let it roll over too!
Fair play you did well from it.
Im gonna hold out and see if they offer a discount , im pretty certain they will call me back
lol , do you get enough to justify the big pricetag , they are quoting me £948!
Out of all the ones ive looked at it seems the best and im very tempted, seems a modern way of a trade advert
one hit and its perfect to get those stupid wee jobs out of the way after , no fun doing it on your own with all the faff.
Lad can go to college if he wants , suits me , i only need him a few days a week but i want to offer that rather than just use him now and then , no use to nobody and hes a...
I tried this last year and didnt like it , i found it hard to keep track of what i was getting in , i tried to pay everything into my account but missed a fair bit and that messed up my invoices and meant i had a pretty big bill.
Easier for me to use CIS and get it taken at source and claim each...
Yeah couple of builders say they get a good bit of work from the sign , neighbors dont want to call in face to face but take the number.
CheckaTrade offering van signage with their package
Im sort of halfway there , couple of my builders went on to other things so i want to replace them but wanting to build up more domestic clients.
With my builders two want invoices and stop tax on the CIS , i offer them quality work , no headaches and guarantee ill book time if they give me a...
DO you mind me asking roughly how much it costs?
I had an advert away years ago and got a decent bit of work from it but they ended up hassling me for years to put new ads in , i had to block their number! So im a bit put off by that but if its cheap enough ill consider it
Based in Northern Ireland and things getting busier past year so i gave up a few other interests i had and am now on the tools more or less full time.
Too old and out of the game too long to be knocking out site houses , ill leave that to the young uns.
So focusing on small builders and direct...
45 and starting to understand what they meant by a young mans game!
flat out busy and my body knows it, lot of aches and pains and once i sit down i find it hard to get up again.
It offers a lot of freedom and the money is good , im hoping for a lack of plasterers and a building boom , earn some...
I agree with Stuart23 , you should beg for your job back.
PAYE , holidays , pension , retirement
Plastering is the worst trade , only good till ya body cant do it anymore then your on the scrap heap with feck all
All self employed now , work your arse off on sites for a sum not far off the...
Well he just gave me Naproxen 500mg
Im not happy with that , read up on them and they sound a bit hardcore with the side effects and dont want to take them for a month.
He said come back in a month and will do the referal if not better , might just dump the tabs and go back.
Not a fan of...
I worked out there for a good few years.
everything A.Plasterer says is right , its not easy and you have numerous hurdles to overcome.
Nice lifestyle though if you make it work , in my case i did lots of jobs and plastering was a nice one for extra dosh when you got it.
Takes a while to get...
yeah got the doctors appointment in the morning , got so bad i cant work so im taking 2 weeks off and hoping it goes away. Think it might be more than tennis elbow , seems a mixture with real bad carpal tunnel and maybe a muscle tear with ganglion cysts , nightmare :)
ive found this past few months , have started using carlite (also shite on anything other than S&C) and Ultra finish which is quite good.
What im finding is it looks different mixing it , im finding it hard to keep consistency , looks right but ends up pish and have to add more.
Also has that...
Marshy has it sussed.
The builder will always be more and less on time so usually can give a good notice and be no more than a day or two out.
Clients dont understand how trades work so you have to treat them different and explain the process a bit or else youll be skimming the kitchen after...
Homebase are doing the flexis cheap , picked a couple of 2 baggers up for £1.50 each.
But they are shite now , used to have one lasted years now im paranoid everytime i have to lift them as the handles snap.
Last around a month a time.
you wanna be subject to the bonding we get in ni.
could be 1 hour , could be 2 , likely possibly3, 4 or maybe youll wait till tomorrow when the suction will end the best of ya .Thisle stuff is ok , around 2 hour , at least you can skim over it
London prices are a shocker!
Been asked to go a few times recent, offered a big note for 5 days and half day saturday.
Turned it down as by the time i drink , eat and be away from family id be worse off.
My tuppence is that once your away from the sites its very hard to go back.
You only remember the bad times :) Plus your older and not as fit and you know what you have to do to make a decent weeks wage.
Your only as good as your last job , plenty of young lads with families have the motivation...
Very few give a feck now esp when you mention it and say i can fart about packing it and fixing joists but thats gonna cost you X amount of GBP.
Or i can just board and skim it keeping the ceiling line right, be near enough.
99% take the latter option
2 sets
about 2 bags a hit.
Thats plenty on my own , no labourer and domestic
usually bag and half to lay on and half bag to close in but stick the 2 coats on with one hit sometimes too.
All depends.
Aye i have , even use barrier cream and moisturiser on the hands now.
Substantial difference in pressure used with Nela vs MT for final couple of trowels.
Cant be arsed reading through the entire thread to get your context but ive a lifetime of it , bad back , cracked hands , tennis elbow ...
Im giving an extra flatten in with the MT as the stuff is hanging back in the damp cold weather.
Walls all coming up 100% , be very hard on the arms using the MT to finish now.
Nowt wrong with the Nela , makes skimming a lot easier.
Hope things work out, plenty of us been through very similar.
As said try get a council flat , kinda future proofs you , cheaper rents and extra bedrooms for the kids when they visit etc.
Takes a fair bit of time for things to settle but all works out eventually and for the best.
Going to go back full time if i can get the work in the new year so ill have no problem trying those.
Look great for the ceilings as i don't use stilts.
Found this forum and reckoned the Nela to be a gimmick or sales pitch but took the plunge and has made skimming so much easier , esp finishing.
Can we bring something else out so all i have to do is look at the wall and drink tea and chat with housewives?
I'm going to predict tacky liquid wallpaper will be popular , know loads of areas would lap that stuff up.
Do a feature wall in the right area and an advert in poundland be working till next xmas
Used to do that , have a cool job now , i work where the jockeys weigh in after the race.
Just getting the official information out to the media, you get a very close insight into Irish racing , im a fan of national hunt so its like a dream job :)
