Hi. Thanks for the message. Yeah think I'll make sure there's scrim tape at one of the cracks otherwise it looks as if it's down to me. Should have asked advice before I started the job. Hindsight eh? Thanks again. Jon.
That's exactly what I did with the string lines, but existing ceiling was all over the shop so looked easier to attach at 90 deg and pack out and screw at each intersection. Wanted to minimise the height loss as well. Anyway starting to think you're right about getting on with life.. Cheers. Jon.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. The joints are staggered. There are 6 off 8ft x 4ft 12mm boards on the ceiling. Maybe not very clear from the pictures. Cheers. Jon.
Thanks. Yeah I've tried it with limited success on some of the older ceilings in my house, but maybe I wasn't applying it right. Think I've got half a tin in the garage. I'll bear that in mind though. Thanks again. Jon.
Yeah I can see how that would get annoying. Spent a long time getting the ceiling leveled and boarded right though so frustrated that it's cracked. Cheers. Jon.
They were from a timber merchants in a covered warehouse. Fairly dry when I got them in November but been inside the house since. Thanks for the reply.
We'll I'm trying to keep an open mind and get a feel for what the general opinion is. Looks like most people who've responded feel it's not a fault with the plastering and that's what I was looking to find out. Thanks again to everyone who's taken the time to respond.
I have had a lot of good replies and I appreciate them. Just interested in getting the different points of view. Not trying g to blame the plasterer, just trying to pin point what's gone wrong, whether or not it be something I've done or the plasterers done. Anyway not fallen out with the...
Thanks for the input on this. Do you think it's been caused by drying out too quick then or do you think it's a problem with the plastering? Cheers. Jon.
Thanks for all the replies and advice. Think I'll investigate a crack and make sure there's scrim tape there. Was concerned the plaster looked so thin but sounds like if it was scrimmed then it's purely down to movement. I'm afraid the motorbike and mould references were over my head but...
Thanks for the reply. The battens were pretty solid fixed every 15" or so a the existing joists. I could easily hang off them between joists. If the plastering looks like a decent job though that's all I wanted to know. Thanks.
Thanks for the reply. I battened over the existing ceiling which was cracked and uneven. It's a 50s semi. I put noggins between the battens at the short joints but didn't pull the old ceiling down to expose the joists.
Sorry no. Only has the pics of the boarding for the plasterer to quote off. They were 2"x 1" with end noggins at the short joints. 400mm centres fixed at every joist intersection.
Didn't want them saying I'd damaged it since they'd finished. If it's something I've done wrong then fair enough but will be annoyed if it turns out there's no scrim tape.
Hi. Thanks for the message. Yeah been thinking I might just have to pick away at one of the cracks till I find some scrim tape. Might wait and see what they say next week before I take a chisel to it though..
Thanks for the reply. They were roofing battens but they were dry when fixed up in November. Obviously had a couple of months more to dry before plastering as well. Not really on a witch hunt as such, just hoping for advice / opinion on whether plastering looked thin or if it looked like scrim...
It's a 50s built semi detached house. Can't really vouch for the joists as there's cracks in the ceilings elsewhere, but the batons I fixed up were very secure spaced at 400mm centres across the joists to level and screwed in to each joist with a 3" to 4" 12 screw depending on packing at every...
Oh well. Thanks for the thought. Yeah looked properly dry in about 3 days. Thanks for replies and advice. Do you think it could be remedied by filling of would it need re-skimming?
Yes that was just for the ceiling. Looked fully dry in about 3 days btw in a room with no radiator. Does that seem about right for a reasonable thickness?
There were 2 of them. In and out in 4 hours. Spent a bit of time setting up and packing up though. Covered the doors in sheeting so my wife couldn't see what the progress was.
There is some scrim tape round the wall edges btw but thought I might have seen it at the joints where the screw heads and joins are visible through the plaster.
The plasterer actually said I'd done a fantastic job of the boarding. Screw heads flush with board. 3mm gaps all round. The boarding was flat. The level was just to show that it didn't feather down to to ceiling light.
Hi all,
I'm hoping for a bit of advice.. I've just had my front room ceiling skimmed and cracks have appeared along the joints after less than a week. I batoned and boarded the ceiling myself, cross batoning across the joist to level out with the 1" x 2" batons spaced at 400mm centres, and...
