Hi all, am starting some site work tomorrow which is all on board using board finish. Usually do two coats but have never done one coat to a satisfactory standard. It's £3m2 which aint bad but reckon nows the time to get the one coat thing down and want to get em on but with good results.
I know you put the joints on first but do you mix thicker and bite off more area cos only one coat? Does anynone use a long spat to flatten in and remove lines first? Any tips greatfully appreciated, ta.

I aint the blones grand, he wouldn be asking a question like that anyway. Have you got any tips mate, where is ian anyway on this forum?

cover your tapes around your beads doorways with a bit of round stuff then go for it and dont bother with a spat ok

Do you mix your whole set up a bit rounder for a better thickness? Would you say it's better to slow down a tad and lay it on more perfectly or just get to the end so you can go back and trowel sooner. The reason I ask is you know how you get all sorts of gremlins like tiger stripes, blotches when the timings all to cock.

that's kind of where I'm coming from. Seen it done and although it passes and is paid for am a bit of a perfectionist and am a bit scared of passing off one coat as good work when I know it's better as two. If it can be cracked though and a new routine perfected why not??

personally, i'd stick to what you know, i wouldn't want risk losing a days money if the agent decided it wasn't up to scratch.

i'm just saying your first day on site is not the best time to try a new method....?

i've only ever seen one guy who plastered a ceiling with one coat and to be honest it was better than my two!! I know it can be done and I'm sure he used a spat to flatten it off! I was on mono outside and was just popping in to look and missed 'how' he did it just that he used a spat at some point and the results were spectacular.
It's board finish, is that a two coat system then even on board by the manufacturer?

thanks man, might try two coats first then the odd wall at end of day as 1 to test. If I can't get it right can always put second on. You know the ritmo skimming vid? that's one coat yeah and did you know if the finish on that was as good as two by hand? There's definitely a gap in the market for one coat that's as good as two but quicker i think on site these days.

ive seen the wall but i dont think it was finished because it was a demo for bg well that was les's excuse

with all the rain of late it does make you think bout switching to machine skimming internally and carving out a right niche for yourself come rain or shine.

any other tips from someone who uses 1 coat regularly? spell you say, that's a f**k**g miracle considering my parent's dumped us in a welsh speaking school!!

If your getting £3 a metre why one coat theres enough cash there. Im on £2 a metre terrible price doing £600 a week not enough for what we do!!!!

600 a week is not great but i think we all need to eat some humble pie in these times. Unfortunately.

one coat

The best way to do one coat is knock it up slightly thicker then normal, and as you have said go over beads and scrim joints. Cover around 25 m2 to 35 m2, and as the white books say, put on around 3mm thick. Flatten off then use a Faithfull Sponge Float 11In X 4.1/2IN go over all of it, flatten off again and trowel to finish.
Best Of Luck
