Got a 8x4patch to do on a ceiling next week normally I try an cut back the existing skim to get the scrim on but is very tedious just wonderd about covering over onto the ceiling ie 12 inches but this can cause bumping across the joints which way do you lads prefer

Just pva the piecing and skim to it dont bother spreading over for sake of scrimming the joints. Yes it may crack along depending on movement afterwards but thats a job for the decorater and his filla etc (y)

Ive patched up as described above and never had any issues just point out it may leave a hairline crack along the piecing but thats it and once painted its fine or worst case bit of filla rather than paying all the extra to have the whole ceiling done !?

Work the skim into the joint , and same on every trowel, worst that can happen is movement cracks and caulk will get them

In the past I've been putting grip fill around the perimeter of the board first a fine nozzle think I'll just stick with that cheers

If it's a half inch slab on the existing ceiling I would use three eighth inch slab for the patch. Two coats of pva on the edge of existing slab and then two coats of skim, filling out nearly level with the first coat, let it pull in a bit then flatten and tidy up the joint before the second coat.

I find the multi tools are quite good for taking the skimming off , score a line a inch in first then just take the multitool to the skimming
