Acrylic render advice (representing the poms)

Alright everyone

Need a bit of advice, just moved to melbourne australia from glorious derbyshire and on my first job.

Im will be working on a rendering job on a house renovation. the woman im doing it for has already sacked to english plasterers because they didnt get the finish she wanted.
Ive told her i'll have a go as ive done rendering before but only sand and cement.

this is an acrylic render she brought, the bags are labeled medium and fine and for the fine coat they were adding a white powder for the colour

can anyone send me a link to a method to how it should be done or give me a few do's and donts as i have never touched this stuff in my life.

i have watched the render systems guys video and by the looks of things the fine has to be put on tight which is ok if you base coat is ruled off flat with no lines in it. what should i do if its all over the place like these guys left it. is this why the fine coat with colour is all bumpy on the final coat they have done

any advice or links to websites with demos or info on how similar it is to s/c render would be much appreciated. i cant seem to find anything online

Cheers, Rob

it should nbe so tight that your arms burn the depth of the acrylic is the depth of the grit size ie. 1.5mm grit goes on 1.5mm thick. get it on fast and rub it up quick thats only real guide you can use if just going to have a go with no prior or anyone else helping you who has done it before = good luck

as above,
if you in australia with with dry heat, it will prob set on your handboard, always work to wet edges.
get a decent plastic trowel aswell
just done some today, with the amount of moisture in the air it will still be soft next tuesday.

get the surfsace flat and even like cork it out with material let dry for appropriate time then skim the finish on to thickness of stone in material

I will take some photos for you tomorrow off the job ill take a photo of the bags of render as well the oxide shes using a brand called hunters and they are based in the uk.
i think youll agree that the whole job is a complete **** up.the base coat (medium) has
lines and marks all well above 2 mm.
im going to have to hawk and trowel it on, no machine provided.
can i just go over the uneven base coat and the dodgy completed work with the medium acrylic render and start again or do i use a pva or primer before.
you know alot of the plasterers round here dont use angle beads they frame the area with timber!
she wants me to do that but ive never done it without angle beads before, seems a bit backwards.

Yes i do spray some jobs but even when applying by hand I never use a hawk, you make a right mess. I have my own way of applying the top coat which is much faster and less messy

Do you load your trowel with a bucket trowel straight from the bucket rich?

There is a video somewhere on you tube with a foreigner putting bucket gear on his trowel and then spreading it. It is a big trowel though what you can hold with two hands. Seems a fast way of putting it on, been looking for the vid but can't find it.

I have seen it sprayed on but only as a textured finish. I would think you would have to be fast on the trowel if you are keeping up with a machine.

Regarding the opening post, he is talking about bagged acrylic? This isn't like our bucket gear which is ready made. SAS make a bagged gear and envirowall is bringing one out but the aggregate is more like 3mm.

can anyone tell me what ratio i should mix the colour oxide stuff to the fine acrylic, i really appreciate all this advice by the way. photos soon so you can see what im dealing with. i forgot to mention the area im working in is called Toorak in melbourne its the second most richest suburb in australia. the woman im working for is jewish and has 5 houses, the house im working on has 5 beadrooms with a bathroom for each one. i know its wrong to stereotype but the phrase "tight as a jew" really hits home when you see her telling the labourers to remove old screws from timber as they could be re-used!

Hi rob why do you need to mix an oxide with the render?what kind of render is it mate are you putting a bag render on as a base coat then a texture finish over top?ive put oxides in acrylic bag render before and they always end up fading, also when you float it up the colours end up swirling round and go like a tuscan render look ok if thats what she's after.we used to use bucket products that were pre coloured down in melt you should be able to get a bucket for about 50/60 bucks would be a lot easier.im in darwin mate and have done loads of that kind of stuff PM me and tell me what your using

yeah course you do you wouldnt know fast if it bit u on the arse

Did an silicone bucket job on Tuesday and covered it up twice over with debris netting from the gutter clips to the floor to keep the rain off. Went this morning to take the sheets down because they are having family round tomorrow (xmas day). A small area has washed off of the drip bead 0.5 x .25m and I'm think how the f8!k did the rain hit that spot, netting was 1m away. Took attitude of the customer and when I am going to do it all again blah blah when I noticed a drop of water fall from the gutter. The guttter joint is shagged and pissing water out. All I got was oh, we where meaning to get that fixed!, see you next week then, happy Christmas' and shut the door on me. Well pissed off. Cant seem to get anything right alately.

we all get them pal, i get my fair share of them anyhow.

what ever you do DONT put thin coat on a dodgy substrate sort the substrate out First 1.5 - 2.5 grit will cover most decent substrates and look great when finished, but sand fine is a nightmare if substrate is dodgy, also you mentioned no beads... thats not a problem just form your angles with a straight edge like we did in the olden days when the boss was to tight to buy them... as for mixing your colours just make sure that you get the EXACT same ratios in each and every batch, if its a powdered acrylic the mix the dry pigment into the dry powder. if its a pre mixed acrylic then the pigment must go in as a liquid... good luck with the job... and PS dont let the customer tell you how to do the job
