hi im looking for some advise from you skilled plasterers.

Im being made redundant shortly and as i work for a small business i get on very well with my boss. He doesnt want to lay me off but has no choice to keep his business afloat and after a long talk and me telling him how i really want to become a plasterer he has offered to pay for a 4-6 week full time course as well as a months wages on top, so fair play to him on that!

Im really just looking for advise, my plan is to do the course over the 4-6 weeks, then skim my whole house (walls and celings) as they are not in great condition, then do a few rooms for my father and a hall way and a room for a friend. then i would be thinking of doing small jobs as self employed gaining experience and improving until im fully compitent.
does this sound like a good idea to you professional plasteres or will i be biting off more than i can chew? thanks

Sounds like not a bad plan to me. Just be aware that times are still a bit dodgy after the recession and work (certainly down this way (essex)) is still a bit scarce. At least you're doing a bit of a longer course. No offence to the people who do them but I don't think you can do a weeks course then go straight out spreading on your own! Good plan to get extra practice in too. One of the main challenges any good plasterer will know instinctively is your backgrounds. Once you know how the plaster will react when you start spreading, most of the battle is won. obviously tackle smaller areas first. Apart from that good luck to you and I hope it works out ok. You obviously had a good boss. Shame to see another victim of these times.
