After many years working as a 3D artist sat in front of the computer for hours on end the passion has gone and I'm looking for a career change. Something more physical.I've always been a more of a outdoor/physical person but was advise when leaving school to do something I was good at which was drawing. Otherwise I would have been doing something in the construction field.

The house I bought 4 years ago needed extensive work. Plaster in most of the rooms was blown and needed to be re-done. I pulled it off back to brick and employed some plasterers in to board & skim downstairs.

After talking to the plasterers asking questions I was getting more and more interested in it and wondered if a) If it would be something I would enjoy and b) could I plaster to a reasonable standard.

When it was time to move onto another room in the house I decided to have a crack myself. Wasn't too confident so I started with a small wall and sure enough, made a bit of a pigs ear of it... mixed it a bit too thick and panicked as it dried to quick. Not as easy as it looks!!

Anyway, a the next day I went over the same small wall again got the mix right and did a much better job. Over time and moving onto the other rooms mainly the bedrooms confidence started to grow and the overall finish was starting to improve. All rooms are finished now and I feel I have gained at least a bit of experience in boarding, taping, beading, mixing, patching and skimming on both walls & ceilings. I would be no means call myself a plasterer or an expert in this field but I did enough to enjoy it and decide this is the area I want to go into.

As we only have only salary coming in, a family to support and mortgage to pay I cant afford to quit my job and work for next to nothing for a couple of years while I build knowledge and speed and experience. Ive look at possibly using a years holiday in one go which would be a month and doing a crash course. But looking on other plasterers forums most people are saying some of these are a waste of time and money and you will learn nothing.

I've also thought about asking any plasterers who would be willing to take on a labourer my time would be free of charge I would just want any travel expenses to be covered. But of course not everybody works weekends unless really busy and unfortunately that realistically are the only times I could do anything at the moment.

In my situation I’m thinking an apprenticeships might be the best route but I'm not aware of any apprenticeships that are willing to take on a 39 year old and pay a bit more than what a 16-18 year old would be on just so I could survive.

Can anybody on here suggest a better way to get into the industry?

Alternatively if theres any companies big or small preferably in the doncaster or south Yorkshire area that would be willing to give me a chance or could possible point me in the right direction that would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Nice first post mate. I don't know what to suggest given your situation. Maybe a plasterers labourer for staryers. Some lads do weekend work which you might be able to jump on. Its a big career change. I used to be quite good with 3ds max a couple of years ago but fell out of practice when I had no time for it. I was going for the opposite direction you are now and tried getting into the computer game 3d modelling industry. Depending what kind of 3d art work you generally do you would be looking at a large drop in pay when starting to learn how to plaster. Its the same as anything else though. Imagine what you earn now doing what you do. Then work out how much you would be on starting yor first day as an unskilled inexperienced apprentice in the same company. Im not saying forget about it and stay in the job your not enjoying anymore but weigh up all the factors. Currently the most important being able to pay the bills and such.

M8 a dont think u no just how much hard graft plastering is at 39 youre used to sittin in front of a computer its a very physical job that takes years to learn and lots of years to master

Why don't you do fibrous plastering which is very 3D so you can do both jobs maybe do with fibrous over weekend in your garage? But you need to learn plastering before that. College 2 days a week to get the basics. Like guys says think twice as you have bills to pay. I was 36 when I have career change and I don't regret at all.

I'm using The Plasterers Forum Mobile App

The lad hasnt got time to learn plastering never mind all that aswell !

Boredom. The grass is greener? I dunno.
It's a choice between happiness and money
Luckily I have a great balance. I enjoy my job and earn enough to support myself and keep the business going.
I'd enjoy more work. But I'm not going to kill myself for it.

Thanks for the feedback I appreciate ... its definitely not a decision i'm taking lightly I have a family to support and bills to pay at the end of the day. Although I sit in front of a computer everyday and hate it I would consider myself quite fit as I do a lot of outdoor activities football, mountain biking and running marathons.

Its looking pretty much like I will take the 4 weeks NVQ level 2 at gold trowel as I can do it while still working in my current job. I aware this wont make me a plastering expert overnight but thats the same with most skilled jobs these days but at least it should give me a decent grounding and get my foot in the door, then I hope I can build from there.

Im moving more into tiling this yr. Plastering too much kike hard graft and the money in liverpool is a joke

hard work and hardest physically than any other trade so if you want to **** your body up become a plasterer!

by the time your competent it will be time to pack in not being sarcastic and not being negative but takes good 5yrs minimum to get good general trowel skills and come across various backgrounds and aspects but realistically minimum of 10 in internal and external. By which point you will be 49 and believe you me plastering everyday 5/6 days a week at 50 is not going t be a viable prospect.

Surely your beeter if retraining to find something that you can do to a ripe old age???

absolutely, everyones a plasterer these days..lol... learn the trade ( all the trade ) then tell me in 10 yrs your a spread..
