Advice on fitting heavy coving

I didnt really want to do it but I plastered and coved 2 houses for this guy and now he wants me to put this stuff up in 2 rooms in his house. I assume I just mitre like I would normal cove and give it plenty of supporting nails. Thanks for any advice chaps :RpS_thumbsup:

If it's onto new skimmed wall & ceiling mike Adams recommends cb12 or fibrefix adhesive, just wet the plaster a little and lightly score as well.

Pins in the wall.to support it. Cove adhesive lafarge ca120 or bg Fibrefix. Ca120 cheaper and better imo.
Silver drying acres every 12-24 inch on wall.wall.and ceiling. Don't worry about joists just screw then at an angle each one facing opposite direction to the last..so they act as hooks..

Mitre as normal and fill.any caps fith casting. U can use ca120 for.gaps but if it sets before you carve it back your ****** and you'll. Need a hammer and chisel :)

That doesn't look like a big cornice to me Mike, would you use screws still if it was onto new plaster as I wouldn't?

Ok - Mike is expert on this one - you get two mitre box , you need to work out the depth of projection and place batten on bottom of mitre boxes (and chalk line along the wall sides) score the walls if wall is painted , you use roof rafter square to cut mitre freehand - countersunk holes for screws - use zinc drywall screws not black ones as they rust - place them in a bit (easier to screw them in once cornice is put up ) , use fibrefix or CA120 thinly along the strike off (I'd 50/50 PVA and water along strike off and let it dry to help with suction) and use casting plaster to stopping the mitres / countersunk with joint rule and busks. I hope am right , Mike, puddove and Topstrop

Thank you chaps, Either of you anywhere near Torquay next week. Happily pass on this one :RpS_thumbsup:

Its 4.5 " James..........................The cove that is :RpS_blushing:

If it was green it would be heavy but if it's dry then easier to fix. Still only 90-95mm down from ceiling line I'm guessing. Haven't done any for a while but I enjoy it.

Sorry to hijack here but have any of you come across cornice made without jute scrim/ hessian in it and fibrers used instead ? I got a call last year about fixing some and went to have a look at job, 10 lengths in total and i made me excuses and ducked it cos 4 of the lengths were in pieces where they had broke in transit. Oh there was no lathe in them either. I just had visions of them snapping as you lifted them into place.

Depend in oli's guts - if he can do it then yes as all level 2 plastering students has to run cornice and fix up at college... Need to order fibrefix, busks and joint rule and zinc screws from Tomps
Well @Olican do you have the guts or not !!?? :RpS_laugh:

Sounds like Artex own stuff which is horrible IMO. Very brittle and 2m length! :RpS_bored:

What are we going to do with you Ryan!!??

Ok good idea to buy joint rule , kidney and oblong busk, zinc screws (41mm for ceiling and shorter one for walls) and fibrefix and small bag of casting plaster - ring Tomps
maybe just cheaper to get mike in then :RpS_biggrin:

yeah its an Italian idea - they are made with glass fibres mixed into the plaster and are made on vibrating tables

We have come across this stuff too, not sure where it came from but very poor quality , the face kept coming away from the re-inforcement and was very weak, they couldn't get anyone to fix it, ended up paying us to supply and fix in traditional fibrous
