Looking for advice on a plaster job that was just finished.
First some background. I live in Chicago in a typical for Chicago sized house. The house has rock lath. I had removed wallpaper myself and unfortunately the walls were not good so I knew they needed to be skim coated. Second I had a 3 x 4 ft hole in a wall from pipe work that was done.
Got a quote to get the walls skimmed in 2 hallways, ceiling skimmed and the large hole plastered. Guy was a plasterer and claimed 20 years experience. In summary the job was to get the walls ready to paint. We settled on a price of over $2,000. He tells me that he is using some drywall compound for the skimming and plaster for the big hole in the wall.
Guy does work and says he is finished. I point out spots that don't look good. Says he is willing to come back when it dry to do anything that needs touchups and sanding. I said fair enough. I wait about 10 days and call him back to schedule time for the touchups and sanding. He is very insistent that I put two coats of primer on first using a thick nap roller and then he will do his work. I said that there are spots that definitely need work with either gouges, not smooth or not blended well and that I believe they need to be fixed before priming. I say I'll talk to some painters for suggestions and then he says don't do that I've been in the business 20 years blah blah. Finally he agrees to call me on Sunday night to schedule a day to come out to look at what I am talking about.
Sorry for long post. The questions are about priming with thick rollers before doing touchups and sanding that doesn't sound right to me. Also ready to paint I assume would mean smooth walls blended well. I'm attaching some pictures of the work. I would say there are probably at least 12 spots that would easily show through paint. Should I circle them with pencil as I don't want them missed?
