Just been to see a job there and it's a stud wall built below an external set of steps. It has plastic sheeting attached to the studs with metal lath on top and then it has been rendered. The render is falling off in large chunks. What would be best course of action as it really is a mess.

Weak mix ,six to one with fibres for scratch, second coat week later 5 to one with fibres and embedded mesh, third coat week later 5/1/1 sand cement lime with fibres..keep damp between coats

Would these render boards just be screwed directly onto the stud work then scratched or is there other prep involved? It's not a basement, the stairs lead to an upstairs flat and under the stairs is a storage area.

If you PM Rich Lord (@runswithscissors) or give him a bell, im sure his contact in on his profile

No need to be formal asif just call me arti, we're all friends here marra.....................:RpS_wink:

The Aquapanel at Wickes is Interior Tile Backer only!

It is lighter and has not been tested for external use.......

If you are going to use Aquapanel as a render carrier board - use the Exterior board........... Try your usual drywall distributors and Merchants (I expect Wickes will get Exterior for you if you specifically ask for it, but probably via a loval CCF of Travis Perkins)

Arti - Wickes are expensive for Aquapanel, unless you have an acct......

Why a weak mix for the prick up coat John? Personally I'd use a 3:1 mix.

Devils advocate here.

Would it matter what mix the pricking coat is if it's pushed into eml or the like? The eml gives it the strength.

I would argue that is wrong asif.
interesting , its just the way i always have done it, so you andy and are saying that its fine to use 3to 1 mix over eml as a scratch, obviously not over plastic mesh as that is designed for a weak mix. am I right so far ?

What plastic mesh are you talking about mate? The rule of thumb is simple, stronger mix on the substrate each coat getting weaker towards the finish coat. That's whether it's two coats or ten.

the render mesh that is used in basements , its like the one that is dry lined over, bubble wrap type mesh, used in cellars quite a bit, i do know about strong coat first obviously, but i dont normally start with 3/1 .have not used tha strength for years except in tanking
