Afternoon all,

Worked as a plasterer for nearly two years back in 2008, went to college and was two modules away from completing my full NVQ level 2 in plastering. (ceilings and basic beading on to brick work)

Anyway was working for a company as a intermediate apprentice, could basically do the solid plastering but never got to grips with big ceilings or stair wells. Then I got ill for a while, and plastering seemed to go out the window for years. This year I have picked up the trowel and Im determined to at least get back up to speed on walls and small ceilings, recently moved in to my new council house and the walls are shocking!

My prep work is still good, its just my application of plaster thats gone a bit wobbly at the moment! Making a bit of a mess but nothing as bad as when I very first started out!

I do two coat plastering, follow a set pattern, then trowel up.
My first wall was a bit rough, my second wall a lot better, hopefully the rest of the walls I have to do all 6 of them will see an improvement as I go along!

I have a few questions but ill ask them in a bit.

Cheers.

hi mate,, welcome along,,, you haven't got many walls in your house have you,,:RpS_biggrin:

Hi mate, you ain't the only beginner here, I'm a way behind you still yet. I'll look for your questions with interest, I might learn a bit too.

Hey

yeah just the 6 walls left now :P

Did an 8ft by 10 and a half ft wall yesterday, mixed 3 quarters of a bag of multi finish and had two scoops left by the end of the second coat... Talk about cutting it close.
When I was plastering before the feel of the plaster on the hawk going to the trowel was different, My first coat used to go near perfect, (I plaster in straight lines up and down and bring corners and edges in as I go) now my first coat is overlapping.

Im not quite sure if I should mix thicker than I am doing, ideally you want the plaster not to drop off your gauging trowel as you take it from the bucket, but more of a slow slide off for consitency? Im nto sure but think i sued to make my mixes a little thicker than what im currently doing now. When its thicker it goes on the wall easier?

Welcome mate , best place for you if u need a little refresher when getting started again :RpS_thumbup: u may get some daft answers just to let you know mind ..... Lol

Having another go today, im working on a slightly smaller wall so im going to try mixing a little thicker than i have done.
I will see if this helps with the application and reduce th 2nd coats work, i used to hardly have to put anything on after my first coat..

Cheers all.

Iv been doing it 14 years and i still lay down with a few lines (2nd coat) quoting my dear old mum..."dont play with it too mich"

I like mine sloppy.

I like the plaster thin too.

:D

No really I don't mix my finish thick. Especially if I am putting a full bag in the trugg, the first few loads on the hawk are just nice if I've got to be a bit careful with them and it just flies on the wall. If its really thick when you start ten minutes later what you've got in the bottom of the bucket is going off.

Nice one.

I mixed to my normal consistency and put in one extra handful on the final mix.
Worked wonders for me, much much better application, 2nd coat was a lot easier and i didnt loose as much gear.
I could really feel my trowel control coming back today, i as even gripping the trowel in different ways and had more control of the gear.
