Guys, had a job to float and finish a couple of small walls the other day. I used hardwall as was on 100hr old brick.
Now, I lay hardwall in two coats, but I don't scratch the first, I just wait for it to pick up a bit they lay and rule off the second coat, never had a problem. Was a guy tiling in the bathroom who I got chatting to whilst waiting for first coat to pick up, he asked why I didn't scratch it as he would have ( said he was a spread years ago till his shoulder gave in).

So, scratch or not to scratch?

Personally never scratch mate i just do as you are n im on site at the moment with about 10 lads and were all floating and setting no one gets the scratch comb out just a devil key after ruled off ready for skim coat

hardwall in one coat unless its thick , if its thick it will slump, do use two coats then but don't let it set completely before 2nd coat , gypsum plasters don't bond well on top of set plaster , anything over 15mm I use 2 coats, then devil float and prep for skim, the answer to your question if you leave first coat to set then a scratch required if its still soft and green no scratch required because they will set together

I would sbr studded with granite clippings, put battens in with laser lines ,scratched with ,, only kidding

if i do hard wall in 2 coats i always scratch the first coat, only a quick scratch,,takes no time at all

always scratch between coats. its what i was taught and takes seconds.

id rather scratch it to cover my own back. if that key fails first thing the customer or any person inspecting will say is where is the scratch coat
