annoying little re-skim over painted wall...

I have an annoying little job coming up where i have to reskim 1 wall over painted surface.

I want to be in and out asap whilst maintaining a good finish. Do you have any advice on what i should use to prime/key the plaster and more importantly how i can speed up the set time...? (i already have a part bag of plaster which will be thrown in to the mix to speed it up a bit-comments welcome).

thought u'd been skimming for 3 years m8? check that paint is sound...tape test. If sound score the surface with criss cross with stanley knife to create key...roll on the pva leave till tacky then skim. If glossy u may want to use bonding agent like WBA or BONDIT but with most paint above technique is fine.

Dirty water will speed up set time slightly...also using the same mix for both coats, and not sparaying to much water onto surface. Thats about as quick as your get.
 
FreeD... i have been skimming for three years mate.

I have used both the techniques you've listed below.
Just fishing for extra tips really to be honest.

I work for a general building company and i feel my own knowledge of plastering has become greater than my boss'... who taught me how to plaster. Since getting my qualification i have been looking further and further a field for opinions/tips on plastering (hence why i joined this site).

handful of cement will send it off quick..
depends on what paint...
running the devil float over is quicker than a stanley knife..
if its silk paint and youve key'd it this way and its not a huge wall sod the pva just get on it..
failing that 1 coat of p'ss wet pva let it tack and get on it
one coat.. mixed up thick...
its only one wall so if its pretty flat you can get a finish on it ok..

Ive got to tell you my friend if you dont want to do the job dont, its never a good idea to rush a job let alone trying to speed up the setting time of your finish. If its worth doing do it right.

pizz contains amonia, its this that acts as a retarder, amonia is put in some plasters as well, not to sure about british gypsum products, but in spain have done jobs where the gypsum is rotten and soft, when you start to chop it off all you can smell is amonia
 
I've noticed the smell of amonia on some jobs we've done, there must be a certain amount in multi. Only happens occasionally on reskims, something must cause it to react and you can smell it.

usually working on a chimney breast, once the water hits the soot it turns like amonia.
 
i reckon its birdsh't with chimney breasts.. the product of burning stuff is usually tar..
sorry didnt mean that to sound off.. ;D
ill bet im prolly right though!
