Another speedskim thread

Looking at buying a speed skim to take the strain off my wrist a bit as gives me a lot of stick in the colder months. I had a few goes with the retina but didn't see good results and has put me off them. Been looking at the ox ones and pole attachments. Which blades do you recommend and at what stages of the set do you use them? Really need to take the strain off the wrist as iv had to get in the van and stick it on the heaters the last couple of days to loosen it up:hueco:.

Blue plastic blade for me, never even thought to try a different one as works great!

I flatten with it almost immediately, don't worry about over troweling with it , it doesn't affect it like a trowel as it's a plastic blade..

-Lay on ceiling/wall
-Flatten with speedy both directions, if it's a 1200 it'll get it mega flat, don't be afraid to put a lot of pressure through it.
-Let gear firm up a bit as you would normally, flatten again with speedy going across the main light source
-Trowel as normal, maybe two trowels to finish, sometimes three depending on how the gear is setting.

You just need to get a feel for it, don't get me wrong, sometimes I just give it a quick flatten with it then mainly use trowel, normally on small awqward bits.

Others may work differently though!

You one coat

How does the plastic blade not affect the plaster compared to a metal trowel? (I have the plastic & metal blades on my 600)

Forgive me for my dumb question!

I know some of the plastering heroes on here can probably finish with plastic I wouldn't risk it, I had a plaziflex once and I lose sleep at night about the number of jobs I did before I realised what a mess it was leaving! Thing is I find.. even when you think the ceiling is flat, it often isn't completely and you see your trowel taking the last hollows etc/ out right to the end.. I sometimes go quite far into set with Speedy but always finish with trowel.

Larry - metal brings the water to the surface for some reason and plastic doesn't so much.. no idea why though, I've often wondered!

Thought plastic fetched water to surface more . .
The plastic blades are good for when you.ve finished so bit of waste of time ...........but my idea is . If you can get the ceiling flat with the speed skim . Then hit it with the thinner black plastic blade it could work . Only prob would be corners you.d struggle doing wet cornerz
