The light coloured part?looks crystallised like salt in the pic,did it feel like gypsum?

Looks like old bonding over synthaproof that has failed.

I've got know idea, I thought it might be hardwall or bonding...it was quite brittle but not brittle enough to be sand/cement. I'm assuming it is a gypsum based backing coat of some kind, that would explain why it's so damp.

Planning to hack off, batten and insulate.

It's not a renovating plaster of some kind?

It felt quite brittle, I was unsure because when you take the demolition drill to damp bonding or hardwall some of it usually sticks to the walls...whereas this came off more in chunks!
