its tough at there at the moment as im sure your aware,

i placed an add in the paper last year for an improver/apprentice and i got 42 replies and i live in quite an affluent and rural area.
and ive placed adds on this forum for lads and had a mixed response.
im a great believer in apprenticeships even tho now adays they are a pain in the arse for businesses in between like me, ie i aint a one man band and neither a big firm,so the amount of hasstle i have with the health and safety the paper work with the citb etc
but im of the school of thought if no one takes a chance with young lads and trains up lads the proper way ie a 3 year apprentice not one of theses short courses were are we going to get skilled fellas for the next generation from.
i did finished my time 12 year ago now and even at the time i had a right job trying to find a firm to take me on,still i stuck at it for months on end and got sorted in the end.

good luck with it and dont give up trying.
