I know you guysare probably sick of these questions but i could do with a wee bit of advice

Not been plastering long and im going to take on a hallway which has artex on it

some of the artex are quite thick and high

any tips on scraping this away? anything i can use on it to soften it up?

would a thick 2 coat of multifinish do the trick or would you bond apply a bonding coat first?

appreciate any advice

cheers!

i use one of those scrapers called a hamilton like the one below

Artex walls - bit of advice needed

even some of the toughest artex comes off with these little buggers

I would also use wickes bonding agent instead of PVA

scrape off the thick/high spots

some sort of bonding agent / bond it ect

i would apply coat of carlite bonding

skim over bonding

not a nice job esp in a hallway

scrap walls with a floor scraper to tack high spots off pva walls i use a 5lt pump sprayer fill artex out with thisile bonding sticks like s**t rub up with orange sponge float brings it up nice & level skim with board finish slower setting time than multi or 2 big hand fulls ov lafarge or knauf dabbing compound in with multi to slow setting time down do not use gyproc adiseve it speed setting time hope this helps we all learn from experience

errr, yeah. Agree with (some) of the advice given to you. Just pretty simple scrape the high points of floor scraper. bonding agent then skim. HOWEVER, just wanted to throw in that you should open all windows and door and dust mask yourself up to the ******* eyeballs. Artex has a tendency to contain asbestos if it was done anything up to early 80's. It's too late for most of us lot but save yourself!!! (Asbestosis- At least we die young with a fat payout)

scrape entire area with a floor scraper, clean down.......

choices

i've seen experienced people do different things depending on the artex!!!

1 - tight coat of bonding, then 2 coats of multi finish
or
2- mix bonding/multifinish together then a coat of finish
or
3- 1 coat of finish by trowel, 2nd coat of finish by plastic/wooden float, 3rd coat of finish by trowel

remembering all the above u have to use pva before (2 coats)

BUT

the problem about going over artex is, how good is it.. i mean how old was it and is it strong enough to
take the weight of multi finish/bonding which is 3.9kg m2.. or is it lime artex?

This is the thing u need to take into consideration about skimming over artex especially ceilings... is it strong
enough to hold what your putting on top?

cheers

Scrape WBA 2 coats of boardy:RpS_thumbup:
Oh and if you don't want to get sued have an asbestos test done about £19 :RpS_wink:

I struggle on artex. Do you have to let the fisrt coat pull in a lot before putting second coat on???? THats what i was taught just not done loads of artex covering
