Right lads my arse is starting to twitch regarding asbestos in artex ,i normally scrape the heads of pva etc.. now i read the asbestos was only used to the late 80s then some folk claim the year 2000.
there doesn't seem to be in clarification regarding what year.
Then you could always bond the ceiling but if there's coving then this creates a problem ,plus there's a weight issue .
i know it can be boarded but if you are drilling through it then your disturbing it anyway?
seems to be a grey area regarding asbestos in artex hope to god that its just small amounts and not enough to cause harm to think of all the years i have came out a house looking like a ghost with artex all over my head :-[

There is no grey area regarding asbestos in Artex. Go on the HSE website and search Artex, it will tell you that it should not be drilled or scrapped. The cut of date for asbestos in Artex or other brands of texture material was 2000. I either bond and set or turn the job down if they don't want to pay and would rather have asbestos fibres floating around their house. And before anyone says there's nothing to worry about even teachers have been proven to have got asbestos in their lungs just from pulling drawing pins out of the pin boards in their class rooms.

Hello Mate
I was like you just scraped all the high spots then skimmed away, don't now thou, now i bond it first then skim. there may be nothing to worry about but why take the chance, plan on enjoying my retirement not sat on the sofa wheezing all day knocking on deaths door

you must loose alot of your coving line no?

Hello Mate
Yes your right you will if its thick artex i tell them it will need to come off then be replaced and if there not happy with that I leave it for someone else to do

We do alot of work for a asbestos removal company and they send all samples off to a lab to be tested and the ammount that is in artex is very small and i dont think it is the dangerous type but to be safe wear a mask as you dont want to be inhailing any dust realy.

m8 fair point until this month i scraped and coated away but the HSE advertise on radio all the time now so now if it,s really heavy artex i,ll explain and try and board over, if theres coving and Mrs Smith says it must stay well it,s time for a walk and say goodbye, cant take a chance m8

Don't listen to the radio mate its all bureaucratic bullcrap. They are trying to control us George Orwell was right :-X

every time this subject comes up i say the same thing. the asbestos in artex is white asbestos, the least harmful of all the different types. my old man died of mysothelia, a cancer caused by working with blue asbestos so i've looked into subject VERY closely. don't sweat it boys.

skimmed an artex ceiling on tues ( yea i did scrape it back , as i normally do) then just as i'm on final trowel , bloke say's can you give me a price to stipple it, as i like the stipple effect ??? ??? did it today , first time i've done any artex in seven years 8)

Yeah should be concerned but what about smoking, excesive drinking, drugs, sorry just a thought.

gaaaawd mister, that artex is dangerous stuff, ive had to put my prices up to double just for the danger money..
still just scrape em and skim em though.... ;D
i love the hse, keeps frightening the punters, and its all just ammo in the armoury innit, plus it keeps em out the f'ckin room ;D

im thinking oinvesting in another second hand henry hoover, painting it yellow and black stripes with some hazard stickers over it, charge em an extra 30 quid just to hoover the dust up... :P
