Hi,

have been thinking about branching out into artexing. I know that it's not in vogue at the moment but that's besides the point. I have found that british gypsum do two, two day courses, a basic and advanced course.

I know that there is some need in the insurance related work.

I'm looking for some advice in the following areas and would appreciate any help given (from plasterers who do artexing).

1. how many jobs a year, on aveage would i likely to be carrying out?

2. how long would you envisage it would take to get upto a good standard of work, am i looking at the same sort of duration as skimming/rendering?

3. how are jobs estimated for pricing/ materials required/ duration of job

4. has anyone taken part in these courses recently and is four days enough initial training?

thanks

Its like plastering mate, you cant learn in 2 days.Once out in the world you come across allsorts of obsticles to get over.

I've done loads of artex. I know the job inside out. Every scenario, basic patterns like stipple and swirl through to the more intricate comb patterns with borders and rose combs and changing patterns i.e artexing over artex. On the work front, things have been very poor for the last 7-10 years to be honest. At one time there literally wasn't enough hours in the day for it, now i'm lucky to do 1 every month on average. It might come back into fashion, who knows!! As for learning it? I reckon you could take a basic course and build on it if you already have a good knowledge of plastering. I will say one thing though, artex is a helluva lot easier, physically than plastering. I can prepare and tex a 5x4 ceiling in a couple of hours max.

Same as Casper ;)

It's a piece of p1ss to do & nice easy money ;)
I've been doing insurance work for the last 10yrs, near enough week in week out & would say on average maybe
1-2 jobs a month with a textured pattern would be required.
I found most people on insurance jobs just want a flat ceiling nowadays.

artex yeah go on a 2 day course just like plasterers do .lovely more work to put right ;D the point is plaster and artex are both piss easy to do on a site on plasterboard, its when your working in someone elses home things become a lot more interesting ,you have to know what /how to prep up correctly .also like casper says 5x4 ceiling in the blink of an eye [on a site getting £2 a meter um bag of plaster £3.80 bag of ARTEX £14 you do the maths, also taping up try it it aint no self adhesive for muppets ,i go price up mrs jones artexed ceiling 4x3 meters to plaster it i know will take 4hours start to finish materials £15 so price it at say £110 if she wants it artexed by the time you,ve skimed over the old pattern 3 times with artex then applied the new pattern your looking at a 8 hour job [waiting for sealer to dry and tapes to set aswell] materials aprox £25 ,but mrs jones dont want to pay £160 cause she can have it plastered cheaper properley by some other muppet for £60 .yeah bullshit makes every thing sound so easy :-*

I have not once been asked to do it

Brrr, Brrr, Brr, Brrr. Hello is that Richard Brown plasterer? oh, it is. Could you artex a ceiling for me? ;D

Thanks for the advice fellas. I'm gonna give this some consideration before I jump into it and make the wrong choice. I am aware that some people would call themselves a plasterer after a 2 day course, so would not disrepect an artexer by calling myself one after 4 days of training. Like many, I've served my apprentiship and attended two years of college. Sorry if I broached on a touchy subject, don't worry, I'm no threat to your artexing number.... Yet!

went self employed back in 93 and went on the artexing course for 2 weeks ----

bearing in mind i was in the plastering/building trade i picked it up fairly easily

if i had been a butcher or worked in a supermarket before maybe it would have been more difficult...

60% of my work up till yr 2000 was artexing---

domestic and sm builders

tide turned against artex --- was just asked for more plastering/rendering instead-----and advertised for it

loads of boarding and plastering back over artex since

did a patch (which i never would have done then) a few months ago

not done a ceiling for years and wouldn't want too either---

back in the 90s you would have had a shout on the insurance work ----but that has changed now as the householder tends to be given a medium size contractor working direct to insurance

also in the event of damage i think most people would wan't a ceiling plastered instead---

you go for it if you want to but not sure how much work is out there now???

How do you know? Do you have a crystal ball? ::) lol

Oh, forgot to mention, i've aretexed 3 ceilings in the last 6 weeks. The last one was a bedroom ceiling on friday. ;) 2 weeks ago i re-artexed a 40 m lounge ceiling, i'd previously artexed it 12 years ago and the customer had a burst pipe so they wanted it done in the same style. I skimmed over the existing artex with artex smooth over and re-texed he same day! £350 ;)

used tons of it in the 90s now just skim over it all the time it was fast money back in the day u could pick up a couple of hundred for a few hours work but that was the only good part its s**t in every other way and s**t to skim over
