Artex

Hi everyone,

I've been plastering for about 15 years now but haven't had much experience skimming over artex. I've got a 12x12 ceiling to do that can't be overboarded due to coving. What's the preferred way to do it? I normally put one coat of pva on let it set then another and apply plaster while it's tacky when I'm over skimming old walls. I don't want the plaster to slide around with there being no suction.

You been plastering 15 years and don't have experience with artex:eek:

I said I don't have much experience. Have done loads of walls over the years but usually overboard the ceilings so was just wondering what other spreads do.

Some people are proper spreads and don't touch domestic shite.
But still never touched it in 15 years Andrew...and with that much experience you'd think with a proper spread intuition might kick in....first time I skimmed artex I just went on thicker and didn't think much of it

You doing some artex next week lol.
I got full bungalow to do for brickies gran. He said he.ll scrape it pva and sheet up so no nasty dust to inhale just regular gypsum diet
Lol. Funny enough I've just got a small job applying Artex. Future work for someone. Oh and yes I've skimmed over acres of Artex.

I don't ever remember seeing my old man reskim over Artex, so quite possible.

Do you numptys not read posts, just jump in to slag people off. I've skimmed loads of artex walls and as I said before put 2 coats of pva on and skim over tacky second coat. I just wondered what other spreads did.

A technique that has come to be known as 'zombie mix' is to add 2-3 handfuls of binding coat in with your first mix. It gives it a bit of body and is great over heavy texture

Thanks Olican an informative answer. Think I'll give that a try.

Ooooh a artexer you really are in elite. Only time i.ve used it is to stick coving on
More like a dying breed rather than elite. I definitely wouldn't stick coving up with Artex after the near horror story I was told.

A guy I know stuck up a house of coving on a new build using Artex as per usual. A few months later and he gets a call from the builder saying that a full length of coving had come done. He went straight round to the house where he was led upstairs to the smallest bedroom. There before his eyes was the babies cot with the length of cove straight done it's length!
Luckily the couple had gone out for the evening and when they returned and went to put the baby to bed that's what they found. If they'd been at home who knows what the outcome would have been?
A tiny leak in the loft had caused the Artex to fail, but then it should never have been there in the first place.

Never be afraid to overboard because of coving, just put in a plasterboard edge bead or even the dreaded shadow bead

I heard a similar story once from a cover, he would use a mix 50/50 board adhesive and artex to put up cove, had done for years. He had a whole house fail, he put it down to product failure

I'm sure that we all know the weight of a length of coving loaded with any sort of adhesive, definitely wouldn't want it falling on your bonce.

Always use cove adhesive. With cove you need to prime surfaces. I've pulled loads down over the years and replaced because it hasn't stuck. Seal wall and ceiling line. Seal dry cut joints as you go and spread filler in the joint so it pushes out. Never get shrinking cracks in cove joints. The safe answer to prep artex is a blue grit. You need a good seal to stop the artex going soft from wet plaster. I've started to use gardz and let it dry, then Pva prior to plaster.

Someone's got to do the ' domestic shite' . You want to try skimming some old walls instead of perfectly flat new builds. Then you'll see what proper spreads are.
Lol I've done all-sorts over the years mate and only joke about the 'domestic shite'.

Let the pva dry completely . On the coving front .cove adhesive it goes off quicke in the joints. And I always put a few 2x30mm galvanised nails in .in case paint or something fails . Artex is to soft 1 belt with the hammer and its down .Cheers.
