trade, well been on my own now for four years after passing a two year course at birmingham construction college...i do loads of domestic work and been paid for every job ive ever done...also done a few site jobs for an agency, but really wish i was a bit faster as some plasterers just leave me standing...any tips?p.s. i always make sure my work is right....its just my speed....

Ignore speed for the time being mate. The most important thing above all else is the end result.
Speed will come .
The finish is all that counts.

just concentrate on neatness mate speed will come with time, the neater you put it on the more meters you will put on because you wont have to mess aroung so much when you are towelling up ;)

the one problem i had when i first started out on my own was, when i was trowelling up at the end of a skim,i just could not walk away from it i would be checkin and double checkin it all the time,i was lookin for any marks etc etc...i aint so bad now though...it comes with confidence i suppose

haha bet you used to go over the same wall every 5 mins and probably give it about 50 odd trowels :D :D
dont worry mate we have all been there ;)

I was exactly the same when I first learnt.

if i spent time filling in every hole on my walls i'd never f**k**g finish. 30 coats of paint should fill um

glad to know its just not me then, honest it used to send me round the twist....

To be honest which is the best poilcy,if you been plastering for 4 years on a daily basis and you aint upto speed u should try another carear mate.
Ive said this before, youhave to keep pushing yourself to get more on,no good always going for 1-2 walls try 3 .JJust think back on how many times you been waitting for a wall to pull in and wished you put another on as you had the time.
Once you got the gear on the walls and flat you can bring it back to life with water if need be,just make sure your second coat is on the wall flat with no lines.

get a spot and stand and run to it from the wall quicker than scooping then when you get to the wall thrash youre arms up and down as fast as you can ......whatever you do dont worry about what it looks like you can sort that out later with a hose and trowel ;)

I don't think you have to change trade but you do need to push yourself harder this is not a trade that should be a stroll in the park. Being well organised and working to a well rehearsed method will also increase speed.

Learning to plaster takes some time, getting fast takes years.
not if you learnt from the right person, who was capable of doing decent meterage with a quality finnish.Once you can plaster to a decent finnish then its time to work on the speed /meterage .
Andy touched on it above when he mentioned being organised. This is one of the main ingrediants to being faster, having enough clean water there ready, plaster there ready, mixer cleaned ready, wash water clean ready, spot clear, walls pva'd ready, not sh i t in ur way.if you get a few mins inbetween trowels clear up or pva some walls or cut a few beads,a plasterer only stops for a s h i t a fag and lunch!!!
ive had people work for me in the past that have had there lunch break then pva walls after lunch and sit around waiting for 20 minutes " so use common sense" pva before lunch then ur ready to go after.
Work in a way that ur always getting maximium walls done even if it means u gotta go into another room to put a small wall on and run back and forth, always try to put as much on as you can once its second coated and flat u should be ok to wet trowel and polish up.
Once your capable at plastering just try to make the mixer a little runnier and go for more walls.

spot on mate, especially the bit about pva'ing before lunch. the lab doesnt understand that and it really fucks me off. wants to have break before we start a set. why not get it on. second coat it, have a quick bite, trowel up, quick drink, trowel up, finish and f**k off early

i agree with what you are saying skimmin but i think its a case of learn to skim, get some CONFIDENCE, then start to go faster, if he starts to panic it will all go wrong. its getting confidence that takes the time mate he needs to take it slow and get used to the materials that you are working with, once he knows the score then he can go like a nutter ;D

when you,re at the point when you,re not even thinking about what you,re doing-youve cracked it!you too will become a plastering robot!!

Once you can plaster a wall to a good standard undestand suction and know how to control it properly, there is no reason why u cant start banging walls off left right and centre, once your capable .
Once you got the finnish to a good standard its time to up the game and start earning money not farting around with 3 walls a day when you can do that a set (where possible obviously).

IMO ur always thinking mate ....which room /walls next /getting scaffold in that room now?/ how many walls we got pvad ?/ lets get some beads on with that left over gear round that window / lets putt some bonding around that window so we can skim next set / when u go emty buckets bring some screws back up/ always thinking about the next move always mate.

i used to be a f**k*r for that when i was a lab. when we were on site i was taking excess boards out of 1 flat and taking skimming back in. but wasnt going board out skim in board out skim in. i was taking all the board out THEN taking skim in. until someone said your making twice the work for yourself. i never do an empty handed trip now if i can help it. its little things like that and other things you mentioned skimmin, that can knock half a day of a job.

my speed was crap a while back now then went back to work with theguys that showed me the way and they laughed at my method showed me another way and never looked back

Maybe being shown is the the way?

I am always thinking too.

I dont mind being slow and good nothing worst than being quick and having to drop back to do snagging.....by the way that is not intended at anybody just my opinion

Danny
