Hi Bispham

where you off to?

One of the Knauf Drywall Guys from the UK moved out to Perth earlier this year - he is having a great time and doing well...... drop me an E mail (see my profile) and I will send you his details so you can make contact....

Good Luck - keep posting on here!

i worked there 10 years ago.if your a taper u will find work no probs.also loads of cement renderers needed, internal and external.although not sure i would like to work there rendering outdoors through there summer months due to the heat.i skimming was almost unheard of when i was there

worked with a oze here he said its all tapeing inside he never saw skim till he come her plus the can get any size board so not much tapeing either

I know someone who was in perth skimming so they must have it also my mates in sydney mainly taping inside but the orientals have got most of that sown up and very hard to ask them guys who is running the job unless your fluent in their language.

Ive been in Oz plastering this year - Perth

All internal work is s&c .... its thrown on then 40-50 mins later straight edged - due to the heat you can see the low points . The s&c straight edged off is then remixed and the low areas are patched then one final straight edge and wall done. They dont use darbys or the methods we use over here .

You have to hit 70-80 metres a day floating out and then they skim with Lime putty afterwards ... aint too different to multi finish imo and isnt a problem if your good on a trowel ... The heat is the killer as its non stop from the word go ... i was in with a gang of 6-7 - 2 on the mixers and a constant flow of render coming ... floating big houses out in a day and a half max .

I wouldnt expect to walk in and start skimming regardless of your age or experience ... you start on the mixers again as its a new way of working etc - i fell lucky as first firm had labourers and he sent me straight onto throwing on ...

Other than that its render outside but acrylic paint trowelled on the render after its primed then rubbed up with a plastic trowel .

Money is decent but not a massive improvement on what you can earn here but ou also have to factor in the cost of living in oz - 2/3 times as dear as here.

Any other questions plz feel free to ask

Is it worth the hassle ? What block do they use over there do they seal it or anything and are you skimming the sand cement same day cheers

What's the crack with that ? I've seen some in Spain and it looks like they throw it up hen don't bother cleaning the joints lol

Thats the Spanish way mate bit more fussier in Ozz, Perth is the most isolated city in the world so most building materials are produced localy as transport costs would be prohibitive so i suppose terracota is all thats available mind you that was the early 80s dont know what its like now hopefully adamd will be back to inform us.

Hi lads

Yes its as stated terracota block ... the lads i worked for were super fussy about corners, once the patching has been done and the final straight edge over them they then run a trowel upside down flush with a 90 degree angle to gently rub anytiny excess but to be honest the straight edge they use which was like a giant cad techs rule the cement comes back off like a dream ...

I was suprised at it not sucking into the block with the heat and even remixing what was edged off but they leave everything plumb and lined in. was 16 shovels of sand to half a bag of cement and usually a 1/3rd of a shovel of hydrated lime

They dont skim the same day... just hose down the walll a week or 2 later and then skim with lime putty .. comes in a big watery bag and then hardwall is mixed in it . 90% of the work i did was no angle beads, they do the internals / externals by hand or there bull nosed - beads are spec'd by the client and not standard as over here.

I couldt really comment on plastering in other areas though ... i know over the other side of oz they use totally diff materials and different methods and some i knew had trained for years in after they moved to perth

Hard to say whether its worth it - i was abit taken back at first at how they did things, 99% of ceilings are taped and jointed but thats a separate trade as is ceiling fixing .. i didnt find the money massive, the main lads earned the $$ because after you hit say 50m2 anything extra made him the money plus he was there throwing on so he was prob earning easy 500-600$ a day

i was over there 5 months on a working holiday visa... work was up and down as houses werent selling so i wasnt better off when work was bad last year over here - back in uk now and doin good to be honest

Most advertisers want at least 2 years min western oz experience so its good to know some lads in any trade as they can point you to the plasterers they know
