Best way to plaster Chimney breast

Been to look at a job today the lad has had a chimney breast built in breeze block to house a cassette style wood burner the brickie must be blind or a cowboy or both it's up to 40mm out at the top (big step back aswell not even subtle!!) I'm goin to do it s&c then skim but worried I will get cracking/shrinkage at the top having to build these areas out

So should I dub out and scratch day one top next day and skim the day after or should I leave it longer between coats??
 
I should add the fire is already fitted and they have left it 20mm proud of the block work to be plastered up to and as said before it's out almost 40mm at the top it's not even straight the front bows it's just a mess. Will get some photos when I go and see him.
 
When we've plastered round fires like this the only method we were advised to use was sand & cement only and trowel it up. BG said it's plasters are only guaranteed up to a certain temperature. My other half's stove for instance has brick at the back of the opening and rendered sides. The surround is in pointed brick.

Sounds like a bodge job to me.
 
you need victas heat resistant plaster mate google it plus been on threads on here...must warn you its fooookin horrible to use and mega mega expensive!!!

I used the ever build heat resistant plaster last week .... reminded me of some german premixed lime plaster I used last year ... was like treacle ..... trowelled up fine but took a while to pick up ..

got 25 kg for £53 delivered .... does about 3 m2 at 4mm thickness :-0
 
Iv used Everbuild heat resistant before ( yeh it's Fooking nasty stuff) but when I mentiond the price he jumped a mile!! I just said I couldn't guarantee it wouldn't crack. Can't use boards as the wall is such a mess should have taken some pics for the cowboy section!!. I thought a 4-1 scratch with fibres n 6-1 top? Think ill give the heat proof another try on him as he wa banging on about it being the room they'll spend most time in.
 
I'd just plain render it float/sponge finish. Although our wood burner installer suggested Krend as its great for heat resistance?? I've done a few after his advice for customers who love it and no complaints as yet?? :RpS_thumbup:

used it a couple of time rhys its fawkin horrible to use and mega mega expensive.its that bad pal that after the last time I used swore id never use again and just turn them jobs down!!!:RpS_crying:
 
Rendered plenty with sand and cement, weak mixes and lime in. Never had any issues and visit some of the houses i've done fairly regular and they still look cock on a few years after.
