HI all

Still new on the forum but read every nite

Still wonderin how you pros avoid little misses in your skimming? I dont use fat to fill in hollows/misses but use more gear from the bucket and i plaster with a halogen light behind me to show the misses up. But evertime i let a wall dry a can see the odd miss/hollow :-\

Any tips to avoid this

PS im not doing payed jobs im just doin up properties that i own

we all get the odd miss mate .....take more time on youre second coat and dont leave any hollows in it :)

Also read on another forum that you can fill in these misses with decorators caulk and was also told this by a spread with 40 yrs experience but he was a one coat cowboy ::)

If he meant decorators caulk in a tube, I wouldn't use that mate.
He probably meant caulking out with a caulk board & joint cement (ready mixed joint cement or easifill.

CHeers fellas

Problem is its not the "odd miss" i would say roughly two hollows per Sq M to ending up needing to sand them out prior to painting. I take my time and never do more than 2 walls at a time.

Yeah MT permashape trowel prob 4 yrs old

Done rendering etc with it and had it on the oil stone

I was using fat to fill in hollows untill recently and stopped doin this after reading on this forum how silly that was . I can see the misses and i use gear from my bucket to fill em but i still get em. THink i need an old arse stood behind me with a big stick ::)

use a flouressant light u may not be so blinded then while trowling up,apply more pressure to ur trowel wen second coating and then the first trowel after second coating this shud squeeze gear into the gaps.,

Where you from Windy as I have a nice big stick and no labourer to use it on at the moment ;D
I use halogen lights but you're best not to aim them at the wall your doing, I put mine in the centre of the room and shine it straight up at the ceiling which gives a nice diffused light on the walls. If the misses are regularly spaced as it sounds then I would say that there is almost certainly a problem with your trowel, have you tried a different one?

dont put halogen light behind you....becuse your own shadow will be on the wall in froof where ur plastering so u get missus.try to set the lights on either e side where possible.
Natural light as the guys on here will tell ya is the best.

i agree with spunky, just take a bit more time when laying in the second coat, and if there are any make sure you get them with the first trowel, don't leave them till 2nd or 3rd like the guy i work with. it doesn't work.

Im in Liverpool lads

The misses appear to be more oversight than caused by probs in overlapping. Will try the tips u lads have suggested. THnak you.

I do own a flouresent light so will give that a go.

One last question if i may

If i spot a miss and fill it with gear from the bucket do you let that spot to pull in a bit or do you u trowel it flat straight away??

if youve got a miss on the first trowel spot a bit of gear on it and leave it till the next trowel ...ignore the light thing youll be chasing tiger stripes next

I would treat a miss like if you accidentally gouge it with your trowel quite late on. I always try and almost push 'wound' back together with stuff all round it rather than put softer gear in it. Sometimes the dregs in your waste bag from first mix is stiff like plastercene which blends well instantly too.

i tend to trowel it in straight away, usually using excess from your first trowel over. each to their own though i suppose.

Well Windy obviously didn't expect to get a decent answer from us lot, he posted the same question on UK Spreads tonight :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

do youre thing mate ignore andy hes got his head stuck up his ass lately ;)

Ever tried putting your second coat on with a polyurethane float ?? As it is rigid, it will glide over any hollows highlighting them whereas sometimes a trowel follows uneven contours cos it flexes

Just a thought, Ive done it a few times and it works a treat
