Which order is best..i have a ceiling to board and skim and walls to float and set....Rule of thumb i always work ceiling down...however with this i figure to board the ceiling first...then float the walls..i can then run a square off the ceiling to create a square straight ceiling line without otherwise damaging the skimmed ceiling....also i can scrim tape from the boarded ceiling line to the top of the floated wall to prevent any cracking here....then skim as normal...just wondered what peeps thoughts were and any tips..thankyou:RpS_thumbup:

Thats the way to do it :)

i see this a little while ago and diddnt answer it to me he has asked a question then answered it himself.....then asked it again???, but as flynny says thats the way to do it

Ok lets try again for dorkus whose having problems understanding the fundamental reasons of what this section of the forum actually is for and what was being posted in this instance......detailed is a method of carrying out a procedure of which there are more ways than 1 of carrying this out, (as with most processes in plastering)....i've then finished the post by asking at the end 'what are peoples thoughts' on this...pretty basic, pretty self explanatory....so dorkus, can u explain in your 'mind' how this is a STUIPID question and how your representation of a w**k*r is someone who posts on a FORUM to ask what other peoples THOUGHTS are on a subject in a section headed -'General PLASTERING DISCUSSIONS!!!!!!!...so justify your words dorkus, point out the stupidity??...ok giving the benefit of the doubt to you dorkus, how would you word the above in a way that would not get your back up and provoke you in to lashing out with nonsence comments.......the feel i get from you is perhaps everyone should just keep their mouths shut on here and only say whats RIGHT and correct or don't say anything at all....yeah because thats how we all learn off eachother and progress at what we do is'nt it.....way to go chap!! such great assets to the trade and an inspiration to all on the forum!!...

at first it just seemed a bit of a silly question. after that stupid little rant you do seem a right c.unt.

whats a dorkus anyway?

Jack i agree he was being a prick with his advise but the question you asked was so basic and sounded pretty stupid maybe you should of posted it in the newbie section but to be honest you can ask what you want but try not to bite xxxxx

I didn't see it as a stupid question, there are a few different ways to go about it.

The way I was taught by some old schoolers who have probably long since retired is to board and skim the ceiling first, scrimming around your ceiling edge onto the block or brick.

Then rough and skim the walls. I still do it this way mainly because it hasn't cracked on any job as yet and scrimming onto browning/hardwall etc is a ballache and wont stick without the aid of staples.

Although running a square onto the ceiling is a bit pointless, an edge is all you need and a trowel to cut the angle out once it's picked up a bit.

that's what i normally do, board the ceiling, float, then scrim the ceiling line, skim ceiling, skim walls.

I think running a square quickly along the ceiling line is a good idea! I always use a square for the reveals, I might give it ago on floating walls to ceiling. Nice one!

Well i think its a stupid idea :P

well, i'm gonna give it a try. I'll tell you what happens - got a float and set on later this week :flapper:

So you've floated the wall nice and straight and plumb, then you put the square up to it and it shows it out of square. Now you've plumbed the wall so what are you going to do to rectify the "problem", take the ceiling back down?

Well i think its a stupid idea :P

I concur.

I don't do screeds, been doing it for a bit freehand, by eye. If I featheredge both planes, it's good enough. Spend a bit more time on kitchen walls though.

This is a fcuking joke we are talking about skimming ceilings and redering and skimming walls the procedure has always been the same FFS.

You're thinking too much on this one mate. It sounds good in theory, but in practice we only scrim to the available edge i.e. the brick/block/stud wall. In this instance you're suggesting scrimming to the floated wall, which is fine by me if that's what you want to do - just bear in mind that while it might slightly lessen the odds of it cracking, it will not illiminate the possibility of cracking altogether, cos cracking is usually down to movement in the timbers within the ceiling. As for putting a square along the wall/ceiling line there's just no point to that at all. If the wall is built plumb & the ceiling timbers are level you will have your square line & found yourself working alongside Britains' finest. In reality one or the other will be slightly out and you will not have the time required to make everything perfectly square, so just provide the flat clean surface you are contracted to provide. Just remember that a plasterer is there to prepare a surface for decoration :RpS_thumbup:
