Had my first experience with Bonding the other day.... applied it about 11am around 10mm thick, its lovely stuff, feels nice to put on such big amounts compared to multi, I got it level (ish) with a wall brick it butting up against.. left it about 20 minutes and gave it a little scratching up... came back about 3 hours later to skim...hmmm it was still wet/scratchable. I phoned a friend and he was like "it should have gone off ages ago, what did you bond onto", i said "brick" he said "easily should have gone off by now.".. it wasn't till the next day that i remembered a few days ago I pva'd the brick! no wonder it didn't suck.

ah well, i take it skimming 2-3 day old bonding means I now have to pva the bonding, right?

I would have wet the bricks a bit first then used some browning or hardwall mate, then it would've been ready to skim 2-3 hrs later.
No pva needed at all.

Has it all shrunk/cracked yet?
As Nisus said - hardwall is the best option for a wall like that :RpS_thumbup:

right, i'm starting to 'get it'..

red brick is high suction i.e. sucks the moisture out of the plaster quickly, which depending on the type of undercoat plaster can mean it the plaster dries out to quickly and cracks.. about right?

so, for this brick wall instead of using bonding which is for low suction backgrounds I should have used hardwall which has properties that don't 'allow' the wall to suck out the moisture too quickly?

Not sure what to do next, is it worth skimming it? or better to hack it off and start from scratch?

You lot are funny, reminds me of the plastering course I did last year. I work in IT where stuff is either right or wrong, and that approach just doesn't work in the building trade where I would ask my plastering teacher so many questions, things like this:

me: when using a spot board does one have to work quicker, because the amount of exposed plaster on the board is great that that of it in a bucket?
him: **** knows mate, its just s**t that you chuck on a wall!

-
me: is my trowel about 45 degrees when laying on?
him: dunno, i was never any good at maths!

-

him: don't play with it professor!

Herds, whats the rush with this job? ,i take it you are working on your own property and you are not a plasterer .you did nothing wrong when using some watered down pva on the bricks before bonding as it helps to kill the suction that may cause the backing to dry to quick an craze and yes use some more pva on the bonding when dry as again this will help with suction control and allow you more time to get the finish right.take your time and get it right and speed will come with in time.

hey beader, no rush and its my property and i'm definately not a plasterer, i'm 'go slow' anyway. I see what you mean though I think, on a regular job a plaster would bond in the morning and then in the afternoon skim, finishing the job all within the day.

PVA'd it, left it for about an hour then another lick of thinner pva to the bonding and the wall....

I had to work the multi more than usual as the key was in some places a little deep and created a few craters.

Had a call from work on hte 2nd layer so had to rush away so didn't have a great deal of time to polish with the brush and no time to dry trowel. Its in a wardrobe/cupboard so its not the end of the world if its a little dodgy.

One thing I am noticing is I can get it pretty smooth now however I don't seem to be able to get a uniform coverage, not sure whether I lose my way but around the edges everything is fine but toward the middle of the walls it always seems a little thin.

As long as it's covered and you're happy, it doesnt matter too much. Takes a while and plenty of practice, looks alright from what i can see.

Did you take that pic with a calculator? :RpS_biggrin:
