Have got an internal brick wall to re-skim, however half of it has been hacked off back to brick and the owner wants to leave the other half on the wall.

I'm thinking of bonding out the brick half (too tight to dab), taping the join between old and new plaster, pva-ing the old and skimming the lot in multi-finish.

A few questions though...
1. How long would you guys leave the bonding coat to try to match the level of suction the pva'd side will have?
2. Any other tips for preventing the old/new plaster join cracking??
3. I know BG recomment using multi over bonding, but can i use boardy instead???

Thanks

You have answered your own questions really ,let the bonding set chemically and skim you can use board finish just as long as you don't leave say overnight as it may craze , i would try to even up the suction in the bonding and old wall to make life easier and scrim all new to old joints .

This is probably quite shocking but not used hardwall before... what are the benefits of using that over bonding.

Wouldn't mind using it if it's going to do a better / quicker job.

Thanks Richard

much easier to use and rule off . much much much better. hardwall is for masonry backgrounds like brick, blocks etc where as bonding is for low suction backing like plasterboard, concrete.

brush off the brick and maybe vacumn to loose the dust, wet the brick down or use a weak pva mix. you have to give red brick quite a lot of water usually to controll the suction.

Use the hardwall mate you'll thank me for it

shall try the smelly hard-wall stuff. always like trying something different. with boardy do for the finish coat or does it have to be multi???

thanks

Tried to get some hardwall the other day, but the only stuff TP's had was 12months out of date for sale at £2 a bag. should i have got it to try it or would it be knackered??? ???

A couple of months out of date is okay..................... but 12 months, steer well clear mate!

did do mate... ended up just buying bonding instead. some plasterer came in the day previous and bought 10 bags of out of date hardwall.

i thought 12 months was just that little bit too far out of date tho imo!

how much does hardwall retail at??? similar to bonding prices i presume????

theres only 1 problem with hardwall, it (french word)ing stinks!
so does bonding the day after
No it doesn't! Are you sure you've just not farted? ;D

You can get the odd bag of bonding that smells a bit (not like hardwall) same with board adhesive, the odd one will smell really strong for soem weird reason.
