I think they is more work to do in plastering like get 8x4 up stairs dot , dab skim and not just 1 or 2 walls but a lot more when plastering and no f**k**g machine

An interesting debate you've started there Andrew, I've often wondered the same. I've made good money rendering but then again more consistent earnings plastering. I guess it all boils down (literally) to the bottom line. Net profit is all that counts

If your talking one man bands totally different to anything else. I've worked solo 1+1, 2+1, 3+2. I earned most with 3 +2 but more stressful longer hours

Rendering is seasonal and no matter what the season it is still subject to the weather.

Rain, wind, snow and cold stops you working but so does a heat wave.

The domestic market is now getting swamped with plasterers taking rendering up.

A few years ago there was plasterers doing only plastering and renderers doing only rendering. But now it is becoming competitive and still seasonal.

Plastering however is all year round. May still go quiet in the winter months but more weather proof.

So as a busisness, stick to plastering. The big money in rendering is disappearing.

Last summer for me was an average 3 day week. It rained! And then rained even more! Then a good Autumn but then a long, long cold winter.

This year is the heat. Ok if you are labour only and get paid then disappear basis. But if you are supply and fit and have to give out warranties then you don’t take chances at your expense.

I am glad to be out of the contracting business and I will be returning on a labour only wage earning basis. No more expensive truck to run or employers liability insurance. Hmrc fines for late paye real time returns. Health and safety ready to fine you for your workers ignorance. Just turn up, work and get paid.

But it was once good.

For me it’s about what I hate the most , plasterboarding is top of my list absolutely bores me to tears I literally hate even looking at a board , I can’t stick at one place for more than a week or two or I start to hate the job and place and people , I enjoy a bit of skimming but have only done a bit in last couple of months tbh , rendering wise I like working outside , money wise I f**k all my quotes up tbh internal or external so no comment on which is more profitable

For me i make a lot lot more rendering. But i do new one off private builds. I do the internal plastering on them as well. But see skimming as a 50% pay cut when i have to go in and do it.

thats the sort of jobs i do. But every one does different jobs I do not like to do domestic rendering too much covering up. Packing. No room. Nextdoor neighbours. Skips tight scaffolding and so on.

We do the flowscreed and it gets us in the door on the private new builds, so then we tack stick and render/plaster whatever they want, that said I have a few developers who once thought we where too expensive but because we cover all the above, these days I don't even quote for them, they just give me the nod and we have a mutual respect, I aint looking to rip anyone off, good work for good pay.
