after ringing tracey from North east tiling centre ( i got the number from this site) in march 09 i was told that i qualified for a free government funded NVQ.
they rung me back early april and did a skills match (whatever that is) and told me someone would be in touch about coming to my place of work to assess me/my work.
i left it for 2 months with no contact expecting someone to get in touch with me, i rung back in june/july and was told i was on a list for somebody to contact me/come out to see me.

August comes so i ring back they tell me that funding has run out but because i have been on the list for a while they should be able to sort it, ring back next monday was tracey's exact words.
so i rung back and was told "we have sorted it out for an assessor to come out and see you, its (sheffield) a bit far but we have made an exception".

ok so we are on....

that was late august early sept, now today i have rung back and have been told there is no funding left and they cant help me. i feel like i've just wasted the last few months messing around, and now need an NVQ before jan 2010 thats when my cscs runs out.
any advice would be welcome

sounds about right mate, the only thing you can do is pay for it, about 600. When i look back i wish i had paid, when you take into account a couple of days wasted having meetings with them and the time wasted when they come to site it would have been cheaper to pay 600 and be done with it.

I realy dont know how this is going to go, ive just been back to the U.K. for 3 months working on site and was never asked for anything but the concencus was that next year things are going to get serious. My mate got quoted £1800 to get his NVQ for dry lining but eventualy got it cheaper he is 57 and been doing it all his life. You need a seperate card for each trade so if you are multi trade as i am you are in big trouble. As the previous post i havent realy looked into it properly yet but may have to as i have the chance of a couple of big jobs in the new year personaly i think its a mess and wonder how we let the powers be do this to us as it is just a money making exercise and dosent real prove the competence of any tradesman.

i have just rung the cscs people the bird on the phone gave me directions to government funded sites i have just rung them and been told there is no money left until april 2010 and when it comes in it goes straight out as its in huge demand, i have just been quoted £675+vat for a level 2 NVQ.

i have been told that the funding is so low because joiners, brickies anybody who wants 1 has been getting these qualifications, leaving the people who really need them in the $h1t.

i got my nvq and cscs card for £75. we all know its b*ll***s, i had to have a picture of me putting rubbish in the skip wearing ppe! but if it means you can go on sites so its worth paying out. the council maintance company did it in coventry, try giving them a ring in your town.

To be fair a lot of us were told this was coming in years ago (1996), and like most I just ignored it thinking it would never really happen. Luckily I decided to get my NVQ3 late last year just in time by the sound of it. I know it's all b@llocks the same as you do but think yourself lucky your not a sparks or plumber, hearing the amount they have to keep splashing out every year to keep working makes an NVQ seem like peanuts. If only they could use this system to really sort out the chaff from the trade then for those of us that do know what were doing it would force our rates up and then we wouldn't mind paying a few quid out from our Swiss bank accounts.

like the bloke i work with says, hes been at it nearly 50 years and some spotty little kid fresh out of college can go on site and he can't. yet theyre probably not good enough to mix up for him. the only thing u can do is leave a good standard of work and you'll keep getting it. people won't ask a s**t plasterer to come back a second time.

shall we all go upto wherever the cscs office is and kick off ;D

yeh

then go down to widness and get your money back,

then blame the foreigners for robbing our work,

then lets blame health and safety,

then lets blame qualified tradesmen,

where theres a blame theres a claim :)
