in the past two weeks i have seen two plasterers using a car for their work van. Ive seen them stacking multi up in the boot with all their tools on the back seat. I have even seen them cutting boards down to fit them in the back. Surely this cant be easy. Why cant they swap the car for a van? What must the customer think when they pull up?
 
I used to have to do that in me Escort van, what a **** that was, end up needing twice as many boards! and when ever you have to load up the rubbish to take it home, every single tool had to come out and be left at the job, same goes for materials in the morning, unload all ya tools, go and get gear, come back, load all ya tools back up, wasted hours and hours!

theres ways round that mate...
i used an astravan on a council contract last year...

does depends on how much rubbish you got like...

but basically I was blocking up / rough and skim / fitting fireplaces, boarding and roughing / skimming kitchens and fitting kitchens...

I need all the gear for the above jobs...

2 gorilla tubs, one wisk, several power tools in cases, 1 toolbag, dustsheets, roll of floor protector, fixings, cables, transformer...

2 bits of 6x2 on edge up both sides tight up the wheel arches...
2 bits of 3/4 ply on top.... (one had to be removable for the spare wheel)

boards, roller, edges, lengths of timber and beads went underneath...
everything else on top
tools up behind the bulkhead...
be surprised what you can get in em if your organised...

6x3 board btw, get 10 in easy enough...

I use to have a van when I was on the tools great perfect when your earning week in week out :-)

I got ill and was un able to work for about a year so did not bother to insure the van... I get better again but not plastering every day.... in fact I am only doing work for builders that know me so I dont need a van as it will only be a couple of jobs a month and they supply the materials and I just get there sling it on the wall.

In fact the last few I have gone in Janes smart car? Does that make me a chancer? NOPE!!

It just that for me to insure Tax MOT the van we are talking about £1500 plus a bit.... for me whats the point?

Obviously if you are filling the weeks up with plastering then yep using a car is a little bit chancery but still
 
Yes dan you got a point, there will be some decent lads out there working out of cars to save cost etc I used to use a Car and tow a trailer when I first started simply as I couldn't afford a van, but I think there are a lot of chancers out there doing odd jobs in cars, we had a call off a guy last week to skim a ceiling when we arrived there was an old estate outside covered in plaster with tools and s££te in the back we knocked and some guy answered absolutely caked in finish he was half way through skimming the Walls, it was a joke mess everywhere skirting and sockets caked in finish tools caked in gear about 3 buckets solid with finish . Turned out it was actually him that had phoned us for the price. he couldn't do the ceiling as the free hand cove was out of his league. Yet hea still trying to haggle with us wanting a cheap price so he can charge the customer double when they get in from work. A few days later we where at another job local and this same guy must of seen the van an knocked when we had gone home asking the customer our prices and he can do it for cheaper. I know of this guy and he's actually a prison guard doing bits on his days off. I think people like him are getting genuine lads in cars a bad name :-)

Not in an escort van dude, i you got no bulkhead they can just about go in but have to rest on your head rests, which is a little bit dodgy in an accident, would kill ya thats for sure lol

what you do is...

see that little metal bulkhead? well in the astra its 4 bolts.... take it off, lift it up 1 bolt hole, then it sits about 6" higher and you can run the beads through the middle, the boards will run up to the back of the seats... plus you can screw a little bit of ply to it to 'block off' the back from the front... :RpS_wink:

i know mate c*nts trick. we wouldn't have know only the job was for a customer we have done a lot for over time, she said oh Paul " " knocked here last night asking what im having done how much ive been priced me and if there is anything he could do for cheaper!!?? ill definitely be having a word when i see him. found it funny when she said well no because your not a plasterer are you hahah
 
we used to put 6x6 patio doors on the roof.... fully glazed...

made yer arse twitch a bit goin round corners... :RpS_laugh:
 
i did a summer years ago working from a backpack. proper travelling one. subbie i learned from went quite i tried agencies [full of chancers]. im in london. public transport was a knightmare but i didint give a s**t. i had more tools than most.

Callaghan, thats even made my blood boil id have defo phoned him up and gripped him and im not being all macho id have proper strugled not to co crackers on him!

also on that note i hate people that dont work there own prices out based on what the job is worth materials labour etc then just come bumbling in an say whatevere prices youve had mrs smith i will beat....muppets!....hate adverts that say any genuine quote beaten! its like saying that they dont know if there worth 150 a day or 60 a day!

hahaha i know mate its a c*nts trick isnt it. if he was a decent plasterer just trying to be competitive with prices then fair enough, but hes just a chancer taking the pure pi55 his work was pathetic he was using a mickey mouse trowel £4.99 out of home and bargain. We actually done the ceiling for him too that's what makes it 10 times worse! we actually done him a favour. i told him to clear the room out and we will sheet out prep and skim the ceiling ourselves, it came to around 5 o'clock and he was trying to pay us saying its ok ill finish and tidy up now! obviously because the customers where due home from work and he wanted it to look like he had done it and probably throw £50 on extra for himself!
 
Not only has he had you doing the job pretending he has done it,but he has put money on it himself uttter b*****d,fill him in !!!
 
Nice one and go and tell that customer you did the job ,put a buisness card through the door.lol fkin chancers.

Still Danny, if thats Janes car and your not insuring a motor your own no claims is going down the pan, so you may as well insure your van and keep it going, its all deductable at the year end.
 
I lost my no claims when I went travelling... I did not think about it at the time.... doh!!!

However I will be getting a traders policy soon which is actually cheaper for me in the long run :-)
 
My mate Del the spread who has now retired only worked out of estate cars his last one being a Mk 3 cortina, where he found that god only knows b ut that was only a few years ago and a top spread.

Yep..............go back and ask them - all innocence of course - if you've left your good trowel there "when you done the ceiling", then you can pull his walls to bits AND leave yer card :RpS_thumbup:
 
might be better off with a newer vehicle mate... dunno? still gotta sling the weight in the back?
