Ceiling joist sagging/deflection

Hi, having just pulled down an old ceiling with a loft above i have noticed that there is some sag/deflection in the joists. it varies from 6 to 10mm at the worst point across a room of just over 3 meters. The house is old (1930) and there used to be a water tank in the loft above the worst point.I don't think that the deflection is recent as there were no cracks in the ceiling when i pulled it down, in fact i only pulled it down because i thought is best as the room has been taken back to brick.
Is this deflection too great to plasterboard over and skim?
If not what are my options?
Any advice welcome.

Regards

Neil Davenport

Batton across the joists with roof battens to strengthen it filling in the slacks then board with 12.5mm boards.

I was asked to fill out over an inch sag between the joists few years ago in a new build dormer. I explained it would be cheaper to pull the boards down, bin them and reboard and skim straight away. No, the thick fcuked made me throw bags and bags of bonding on it and cost himself more money! Some just don't understand!

If you want to pull it out a bit throw a few handfuls of bonding in your first coat and lay down a bit more generously with your second

Its suprising what you can get away with if you know how to skim well, I've skimmed some shockers over the years, never know how bad they are until you have already mixed up and start laying on!

Sometimes can only trowel the one way but when painted you won't notice much!

Agree, use batten to level across if that bad for the sake of a few quid , jobs done no call backs. That little bit extra always makes a good impression and at the end of the day it's your reputation.

Another vote for battening it out. If it's really bad, pack it out with window fitters shims.

Counter battening is a very good job if you can do , bonding though can most.

If the ceilings down lay couple of 4x1`s flat along top of joists and screw down into joists pulling the sags up level .

Very few give a feck now esp when you mention it and say i can fart about packing it and fixing joists but thats gonna cost you X amount of GBP.
Or i can just board and skim it keeping the ceiling line right, be near enough.
99% take the latter option

Who's going to put a straight edge over a skimmed ceiling to check the flatness??

Give 2 options, bet your next job they take the cheapest.

I had to pull a ceiling down because they wanted it 'straight'. When re done, boarded bonded & skimmed, they said it didn't look straight and we're going around with my 9ft edge on it. Boy was I glad to get out of there.
Fkin domestics, don't know how you cope.

Yup....

I went and priced a reskim for a chap and he had a 3m straight edge on this beautifully skimmed wall and was wining that there was a few very small bumps... i am talking about 2mm and I was like yeah no thanks.... he was an engineer

I worked for a loft conversion co years back and one job was held up by the owner running computer cables everywhere. Went on and on about his house was going to be future proof and builders were all monkeys. Wifi came out a couple of years later.

I be done plenty of lids with massive bellies in them but once it's boarded and plastered ud never know from the floor , done one in the summer that it was 150mm belly From the centre to one side of the room , I packed it down and lost 75mm but that still left a good 75mm belly a little bit of jiggery pokery here and there and you honestly couldn't see it from the floor ( before you ask I did give the client different options)

We did 1 similar packed It out with half inch boards in some places and u cudnt tell from the floor looking up..she was delighted with how it looked

Love these engineer stories off topic a bit I did an artex yes artex ceiling for one to match the rest of his house ..he watched from start to finish when I pulled my brush out to cut in around the edges he shouted stop...he had brought a brand new inch n half brush for me so it was exactly same as the other rooms.
Never did go back to do the boarding in the kitchen he wanted doing thought it be better for someone else to have the pleasure

Cudnt handle that me nowt worse Than sum1 just stop there staring whilst ur working

He was a nice enough guy but like you say watching I have got used to ..it's just when they are watching (looking) for a mm mistake you just can't explain that to engineers they don't appreciate what trouble you have gone to,to lose the say 6mm the thread post guy was on about in the first place

Mention extra money if they want you to sort belly out I bet a 20 now they will live with it for sake of 10mm

Not my client, the ceiling wasn't a bad job that someone else done months previous, but had me rip it down because he wanted it straight, 12 insulation boards plus my price aren't cheap simply because a ceiling was annoying him.
As it turned out it was the head of the door frame which he thought was level that was really bugging him, but the house was hundreds of years old ffs.

When you get an optical illusion like that drives you made and if 100 years old always a chance that can happen I like in when they say can you make your bit look straight to the eye

I ran Lan cables everywhere for my place... wifi is shite Lan is always there :D

Always makes me laugh when muppets pay to get high speed broadband, then connect every device using WiFi. Knobs :ROFLMAO:

I stick CAT 5e or 6 in everywhere I can, cost is negligible when rewiring or refurbing and it'll give you 10 times what you'll get from the best WiFi hub on the market.

Got a bit carried away doing my place though. There's two CAT 5e, HDMI, and two CT100 co ax to every room terminating under the stairs. Not got round to sorting out a server there yet though.

Yup like wise we have 8 lans in every room and in my office I think there are 16 lan points :-) all go to a cupboard where the phone and TV cables are :-) Think I spent £600 on the cable :D
