looked at a job today to drop and re board a ceiling for skim. half the ceiling is missing from a leak but when i got up to measuring i noticed the timbers are set at 780mm centres? the biggest i have ever seen, has anyone else ever come across this before?

the timbers are 35mm - thing is its had a ceiling in its only fallen because of a leak but i dont think they should be putting joists in at 780mm centres. I was going to cross joist with top hat but i discovered at both ends of the room the joists run in the opposite driection

As long as the ceiling joists are levelish you can put another ceiling to it,no problem what way the joist run.
Or you could suspend the ceiling.

problem is the price as you know in recession times it has to be the minimum price poss. dont think they will entertain new joisting

Just get the 2 by 1 from b and q. Think its about 12 pound for 8 3m lenghts. The money it will cost you in wood you will almost save in off cuts

If they wont pay out for new joisting just board and skim it

use 15mm pb or double board it ,otherwise do what kirk said..

gonna fix the timber at the two ends of the room so all the joists run the right way then just gonna waz up some top hat screwed on at the flange then board with 1800x1200 no cuts

50M2 lid but at each end the joist run in the opposite direction than in the middle so imagine all your joists in line then 1.4m away from each end wall there is noggins running the other way so a simple counter batten wont work at 450centres cos they will sometimes land between the noggins and have to carry for 1.4m to the wall - that aint gonna work

you could reboard the damaged area, ping (chalk line where all the joist are) then do a straight over board with 9mm board. back your 50mm screws up with gun grade fixing foam then skim. it sound like a lot of work but it shouldn,t take to long, especelly if you have a board lifter ;D

I never reboard damaged areas i just tack strips of board on the joists at the same width the joists are.
Does the same job it brings it all level for overboarding ;)

just put it back as it was mate,if its top floor 32mm joists at 780 mm means gang nailed roof trusses quite normal in the 70s just allow for extra boards for cutting
Lucius

I sorted it now lucius pal. counter battened it with top hat after first adding extra stud to the two ends first 450 centres just gotta cove it now and thats pay day. I will stick a pic up
