My mate had a ceiling ripped down and new boards up last week. He said the fella who put ceiling up (25 yrs experience and 3rd generation spread) put ceiling up with loads of clout nails.

Mate asked about screwing them in and he said nailing is easier, faster and just as good if you put enough in. He said loads of site lads still tack boards up.

Is he correct as always screw mine in?

The 2 old spreads I learnt with nailed them up all the time & they still do now:RpS_biggrin:
Some people get stuck in their ways.
I always screw boards up though.

If you are used to nailing ceilings they seem to be ok,but you still get the odd one that isnt fixed so when you final trowel it pops out, screws eliminate this i find.

And instead of getting a sore fingers/thumb off the hammer, I now get fingers that are full of tiny splinters off C & N screws:RpS_thumbup:

Yes i have about three splinters in my fingers now i need to buy a screw gun to eliminate this, but i cant justify spending the money on a few splinters.

I find it amazin that old spreads tend to stick with "traditional methods"

Newer ones seem to embrace change ie ,plastic trowels and spats. When i was talkin to this spread about the plastic trowel he looked at me like i was a tit. His loss.

Some people can only ever see the way they allways did it.

Leave the thick f*ckers to it I say.

20 years ago joiners laughed at my mate for buying a cordless drill.

Would I go back to mixing with a stick?............................ Would I have a TV that had no remote control?

Would I bollox

Do BG still sell nails, someone told me a while back that they wont guarrantee the boards if they are fixed with nails probably just another urban myth orchestrated by screw manufacturers.

screwing is the way forward i must admit i spent probably the first 10 years or so nailing and you do get quick and good ie dont miss nail i still tack up sometimes with nails then fill in with screws but its getting rare

I used to nail boards......20 years+ Only recently have i started using screws. Screws are far superior to nails as the joists and dwangs in old properties can be dodgy and fixing a nail is nigh on impossible if the timber has any movement. Nails just bounce.

Yeah, just thinking back to when we were boarding bedroom ceilings in 2up 2down terraces - you had to spend first few hours re-setting the shitey joists or they would bounce all over the place, and you got covered in dust n soot etc.......:-0

oh man, i fukin hate that!!! Always wear goggles!!! Still, it's horrible breathing that shite in!!

I enjoy breathing in all that shite,it gives great bogies later, flick em in th Mrs mouth when she is snoring on the setee.
