Rub the back of your trowel with a decent chunk of clay brick, or as has been suggested use sand as an abrasive. Your hawk, scrape and wash off everytime you use it, it's not necessary to have it spotless, not until it gets too heavy to use anyway, then hit it with your lath hammer and scrape the last few bits off!
i had to leave a h/wall butt in my garage picking up a leak in the roof so all spare tools went in ......this was for over a year, i took my hawk out and all the sludge came off ....wicked .............then first job on site with it was dabbing ........so i left it and banged it off :
i usally leave the trowel in water overnight then use a sharp scraper the next day......some one did mention leaving your trowel in brick acid over night, if any1 has tried it let me know. cheers
Just cleaned a very hard thin film off mine with patio cleaner and a sheet of wet & dry - I guess its the same effect as brick acid but its at a lower concentrate and less aggro. It had been catching all day and doing my head in so I wasn't too fussed if it trashed it.
