I skimmed over my hallway ceiling last weekend and as it had some cracks where the boards met I re screwed either side of cracks to secure the board properly and then scrimmed...when I got back from the course this afternoon (sorry @Kitchy) there is a slight hairline crack come straight back on one of the joints. Question is, was there anything else I could have done to stop the cracking?

I find now that when I board on a joint to joint pva the dry edge first then pva other board edge that will reduce it massively works for me I'm domestic so always do this cos I got the time

Good tip but it was a re skim so no board edges.

Mite just be movement lodan..depends how big crack is/was as sum times ur better scribbing the crack with a knife then bond and scrim over it..

Sometimes it can't be helped on a reskim I've had it before where I've raked filled scrim and skim and still got a hair line and it was on a solid ceiling as well with ceilings you got gravity against ya so little hair line bit of paint be alright

I'll usually screw back to nearest joist / noggin then bed the scrim in some bonding with a handful of fibres.

I thought maybe the same....crack was really thin before and after so wondered if widening and filling properly would have been an option.

@Lodan...

I guess the belts and braces approach would be stagger the existing crack with an overboard so that the existing crack wasn't going to fall on a board edge...

But it's still not a given that another crack wouldn't re appear especially a downstairs ceiling where if joists have play in them with additional foot traffic.

All you can ever do in our game is advise best practice but make people aware of potential pitfalls...

I've also found some bonding in 1st coat can sometimes help

Its another option but u mite end up with same hairline crack regardless as pagey said sum times with overskimming ur in the hands of the gods Espec with over skim ceilings as there's movement from upstairs etc if a downstairs ceiling..ive scrimmed and filled b4 and had a hairline crack on overskims as sum1 said on here recently there always tell customers he cant guarantee it wont crack if over skimmed which you cant u can try and prevent it but ull never be certain It wont crack

Good tip on the bonding....overboard would have been difficult as existing ceiling is level with all the decorative stair timbers so buffing it out 15mm would have meant trying to edge in the new boarding.....crack is tiny so not to worrisome but good to bank tips for future reference.

Thing is plastering ain't an exact science and you do everything in world to stop it cracking and over time would still get a crack it's better the devil you know with this trade, can make things look amazing but done wrong can cause all sorts of problems,it's a hard game to be in cos everyone's a plasterer or they know someone who is and it's a trade that gets pulled apart I wouldn't worry to much either fill and paint or heavy coat of paint

Thanks jurek i ordered some of the fibre bind stuff the other day so will stick that in first coat next time and make it a nice hairy mix.

@Lodan the way i do it is to screw if you can then pva along crack befor buttering your bg tape compound over the crack and bed your tape on.
I use a small well worn in trowel which flattens the tape in while squeezing out the excess. Leave this to dry for at least two hours or over night before skimming as usual. Another way also is to just use the wide 100mm scrim along the length of crack and then also across ways too before skimming.

I've seen some plasterers well 1 use the mesh from the ewi stuff and put over whole ceiling before whether it work or not I wouldn't know cos left before they completed it

Ive also done this on ceilings and usually on larger wall cracks before overskims. As you know it takes a bit more gear to cover and time too so not the ideal way on overskims, i will try to set them in the day before so there is a bit of suction.

I did think it was a bit extreme but as it was a Victorian house can understand the method it's if you can get it into the price and sell it to customer I've started to quote realistically now and my price is my price I explain how I'm gonna do it to them speak with confidence and lately been getting the jobs on domestics can be hard but I'm not gonna work for wages anymore in trying to run my own thing which costs more than wages

Yeah mate had a good run up Til Xmas then job I priced booked in cancelled on me 3 times so told him I'm busy to march now he thinks I was being funny but after 3rd time enough is enough and I see it as if it's his loss if they wanted a cheap job should of said and I wouldn't of wasted my time in first place at 32 things have come full circle for me and I can deal with it better now and hold my ground on price if you can get through Jan and Feb normally it kicks off then we'll does for me

Every ceiling in our place cracked... but that was due to 20 x P5 floor boards falling off a bench in the loft room... it was sole destroying
