Cracked External Render

Hi there. Have a problem with a some rendering that was done a few months ago.

A garage was partly demolished to make way for a new extension. The dividing wall between next doors garage was plaster skim that we had to render over as it was now external. The plasterer hacked off most of the existing skim and roughed up the wall to make a 'key'. I don't know if he sealed the wall prior to applying the scratch coat.

Unfortunately, now there are several large cracks that have appeared and the render has clearly blown and is very 'live' when tapped.

Rather than hack off all the render, would a solution be to mechanically fix EML and two coat render over this?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes,that is a solution,I would hack off though, may have blown fits too strong, dried too fast,Dust on wall, no bondetc

Take of all the old plaster back to brick/block. Use a bonding agent suitable for render and re-do. It sounds like they have have put strong render on weak plaster without a sealer and bonding agent.

get the plasterer back and get his view on it ,then maybe come back on here and let us know what he said

Thanks for all your help, lads, it is much appreciated. Am new to this forum and am really pleased I joined.

Don't think I'll bother getting original guy back as he assured me that it would be fine. He also suggested the EML solution I posted at the start of this thread. I need to guarantee that it will be fine when sorted so am gonna hack off and redo. Will probably EML once hacked off as well for 'belt and braces' security.

Just one last thing, and apologies as I'm sure you've all been asked this countless times, but what mix do you recommend for scratch coat and top coat?

Scratch onto brickwork 4/1 sand cement, second coat 5/1/1 sand cement lime, onto cel cons 6/1 the 6/1/1

Could consider Weber ocr? Equivelent to 6:1:1 put it on top of rend-aid. Ether fully mesh or apply rend-aid and stipple slightly then eml. I prefer fully mesh as I consider eml more as a render carrier.

There a few ways to tackle this.i would hack off back to brick/block.prime with a agent then scratch with 8mm mesh in.normal top coat.all coat s&c.no need for Eml.too costly
