cracking plaster after re skim

can anyone help,ive been on a plastering course so decided to re skim the living room
i plastered over the old plaster. a few months later the plaster as cracked what have i done wrong
i used pva,when i tap the wall it seem hollow if you know what i mean.

did you check the background was sound?

sounds like maybe the wall's you skimmed were silk paint or another substrate with no/little key.

If there was to much suction then the skim would have cracked on the day you did the work.

Unfortunately it's one of the many problems you will face due to lack of inexperience , there are many varying substrates that you will come up against throughout your new chosen career path, and knowing how to apply bonding agents and on what substrates is gonna be one of your first hurdles , but luckily you practised on your own property and not a paying customers, as a newby to the trade i would advise that you leave the pva alone and use a bonding agent such as betonkontact, thistle bond-it ,or wba ,to mention a few , a little more costly but a bit more forgiving for a learner spread.

Where are the cracks? From what you have said it seems the plaster hasn't adhered to the existing so it might be a case of hacking the lot off and starting again.

hack it off, knock the wall down, put up stud work, re-board, get building inspector in to check, if all is ok give it another skim! simples!! :
