I've just re-skimmed a full house, the majority of the walls were onto old plaster and 1 staircase wall reskim a plasterboard wall, I've used two coats of practically neat pva and skimmed all the visable cracks etc..... Basically this job was for a mate and completed by the book using multi finish, however there is cracks all over and I can't put my finger on it! I've never seen this in the 10 year if been plastering! However I no when I've been finished for the day heating has been put on and another thing is 1 half of the house is a fairly new extension and in the garage if noticed a fairly large crack in a straight line down the wall what u think?? With it being for a freind I feel really **** and wnt to put the problem right for him but at the same time if the problem occurs I'm fighting. Losing battle?!

Are they like spider web cracks or straightish line vertical ,horizontal, diagonal,

Hard to say without seeing the job............ are cracks appearing just on the re skimmed walls in the original part of the house or in the new extended part of the house aswell? were the walls sound before you re-skimmed them or full of hairline cracks and perished? That large crack in the garage doesnt sound good could it be structural?

Its difficult to say... If its on old plaster then I would say its due to movement....

Welcome by the way :D

I always tell customers cant guarantee it wont crack with old plaster.as the new skim sets its harder and pulls the soft lime plaster causing cracks.i have seen a room over skimmed and as its dried pulled the lot off back to bare bricks.

cheers lads, the cracks that have apeared are like lightnigng bolts throughout some of them being quite bad before i plastered it was already skimmed and there was no cracks showing through all i can think of is when the extention was built all the plastering was done together so as the structure has moved its moved together and has been alright but as i have applied the new plaster the structure is still moving causing this to crack, but my main concern was that wen i was leavint the house my mates father in law was putting the heating on and this maybe is the problem, i dont want to have to go around the house reskimming walls when the job has already been finished i just need a solution. can you gety British Gypsum Reps out? if so how do you go about it i just need to cover my back!

Cheers Lads :o)

If he as banged the heating on straight away chances are its dried too quick and shrunk the other crack sounds structural if its where the new extension meets the house it will defo be some kind of movement.

You can get BG rep out if you like, but he won't entertain you cause youv. used pva

So why wouldn't he entertain the use of PVA? Because of the old lime plaster and its breathing capability? Talking of PVA I like to water the PVA down a lot as one time I used it neat even after letting it dry not just tacky the whole wall blebbed and lifted even after troweling all the blebs out, could possibly be the use of neat PVA... Plus the extension will move without a doubt

BG dont endorse using pva with their plasters, use bondit only! available for only £50!
If you use pva they don't want to know.its a get out clause for them........or use uni finish!!!! Pmsl! Break free from pva lol:RpS_laugh:

might be the heat causing it to dry too fast, not likely though unless it was very warm, more than likely the pva has failed or its application. The cracks may be inherent in the old wall. sound like it needs a reskim with cracks taped again..photos please if possible..

Tap around the walls and remove and patch any lose plaster before doing a re'skim.Better safe than looking like a bodger.

I rang the Bg rep he's coming next week, it hasn't deboned at all from the wall even the cracks are solid and I explained to him it's not a fault in the plaster or system in any way it's the cracks and best way to fix I went over this morning and channeled all the cracks and easy filled thm in. The plasterers all dry now and set in place so it should work all I'm after is a solution there is an existing crack that has skrim that's came through to so I'm deffo assuming its dried far to quick. All I can think is its been hot then I've cam bk to job in morning and had to open all windows and doors maybe sudden climate change and the house is stripped so the air is bone dry????

The plaster is not loose even around the cracks I have channeled thm out and had a look and there is no cracks behind them either! I hav explained to the rep and he is coming out next week I'm not complaining about the product the product is fine. I hav channeled the crack away and filled with ova, I'm gonna leave it now until he comes so he can see as well and hopefully give me the same explanation has any of you channeled a crack and filled it before and has it been ok? Baring in mind there's no cracks behind the fresh plaster

To be honest mate your wasting his time and your time its dried too quick you said originally the guys old man was putting the heating on as you were leaving which has obviously dried it out too quick. I had the same problem years ago with a mate of mine who rang me up to tell me he had painted it and there was cracks everywhere i said "i told you not to put the heating on and let it dry naturally" he said he never to which i replied "well you must of i only skimmed it 2 days ago and you have painted it". Some people dont listen but unless you told him which i doubt you did coz you watched him bang the heating on your gonna have to fill and sand but next time maybe mention to the customer to leave the heating off coz it will increase the chances of it cracking.

So it should hold then channeling the cracks and fill? I didnt realise untill i opened the door it was like a sauna! I told him it was to hot but he put it on lower that night again and the heat has been contained and not give time to cure! Its a nightmare when its for freinds aswell. I just hope this works and thats the end of it!
