Cracks! (Pics)
OK been to see a few jobs with the same out come and would really like to hear people opinions on them.

Job 1 -
This wall was done a month ago , it sounds blown in quite a few places , it has hairline cracks all over,
and the top coat is very soft and can been rubbed back with your hand! also looks rubbed up while still wet.

i have taken a picture of the inside of the building to show the background it was done on, the plasterer who did the work said its all down to the background?!
this was done in a day and a half
my question would be whats the best action to take to avoid the same situation.

My thoughts are the top coat was to week maybe a 6-1-1 mix on top with a 5-1 backing coat..
and background would bee brushed down with wire brush and SBR painted on

Scratch coat on leave a few days then top

here are the pics

Job 2

This job will be nothing to do with me i am just interested, I'm just doing all the inside.

This was battoned out and meshed, then had a scratch coat of sand and cement then follwed by 2 other coats

it sounds hollow all over and have cracked every were! they blame the battons moving?

how should you go about a job like that as they have definitely Deon it Wrong!

Was it on Dr Dolittles house? Looks like the coats of render were not given time to dry out enough so shrinkage and seperation have occured, one mans 6-1 is and can be very different from another mans, sorry.

the jobs is well exposed aswell i might of been tempted to use mesh in the scratch coat on this ocasion also leave it a good week to dry out then topoff

with the mesh id say yes the did it all in a week! with first one god knows? to weeka mix? what mix would you recommend for this kind of wall?

Looking at the wall on that first job, those bricks look a bit shiny so I would have prepped it with a PVA/slurry coat first. Leave it for 2-3 days, then put a 4:1 scratch coat, leave that for a week, then a top coat of 5:1. Looks like parts of that wall have dried out on him before he has got over it - too sunny? or not enough waterproofer?

that second job if done on battens and eml will be hollow! and as mcplaster says s&c needs time to cure and shrink else cracks,

kool nice replys. also with the eml job i am guessing the mix has to be perfect for ti to work well.. i know the plasterer who did it and i no he did it all in about 4 days! looks shocking!

HOW DO U RE DO A EML JOB LIKE THAT ON BATTONS?

they are happy to just fill it up but i feel if it was me id want it re done!

shouldnt have use eml at all, always cracks , should have used cement board and a thincoat system.

other job, shouldnt have been done in a day, its on brick so the suction would have been bad . should have been scatched 4-1 and then topped 6-1-1.

get people who dont know what there doing what do you expect

also when doing eml iv seen some people wrap the building in building paper first then eml then wet paper and apply scratch coat.. but they dint do this either, the jobs only 10 house up from were i live so iv seen it go up. can u apply sand and cement to cement board or only bagged stuff?

well how did they stop the render dropping thrugh the eml if there was no paper this will create loads of hollow spots also a very week backing and will move around all over the place

Re second job
Should not have used eml on battrens use rib-lathe with building paper.
Three coat work first two coats must be allowed to dry
Impossible to do in four days

First job- should have fixed eml onto brickwork.
Three coats and a stronger mix

knauf 12.5 which i like because its easy to cut is around £23 a sheet. 1800x900. but when you look at the cost of ss rib and paper, plus 3 coats of gear ( which will crack) then its not that bad.
